UK national wanting to move to Chile - What’s the best visa?

Post by alextrombone » Mon Jun 24, 2019 2:16 pm

Hello, I’m new to this forum. I’m a Uk national looking to move to Chile and join my Chilean partner. I’ve been looking at different types of visas online but the information I’m finding seems to be vague at best. I know that Chile recently changed their immigration laws so you can’t change your tourist visa to a temporary work visa. I just wondered if anyone could help or suggest what kind of visa would be suitable for someone in my position.
I’m in my mid 20s, with a degree in Spanish and currently finishing my masters thesis. I am TEFL qualified and have experience working within the Chilean education system. Any help of advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

we are checking on what is going.

You are the 5th contact i have had TODAY related to this.

They just implemented officialy this week, a ban on venezuelans applying for work visas in the country.

what we suspect is that is what is happening is that got spread to all consulates and all nationalities; or, at least that is how the consulates are interpreting it.

so we are pulling a copy of the decree, to see exactly what it says and if it is being (miss)applied to all countries; and contacting the foreign ministry for an official position.

o.k. absolutely nothing has changed, except for Venezuelan nationals.

there is no new immigration law in effect. it is stuck in congress.

the requirements are exactly the same for u.k. and other nationals as they have been for 30+ years.

u.k., u.s., eu, and other nationals can still enter chile on a tourist visa, then apply for residency.

looks like so far a classic case of the chilean embassies giving out bad and confusing information (which unfortunately has also not changed).

Seriously? I can still enter and apply for a temporary work visa? So nothing has changed? Wow, I’d just been reading so many things about the immigration laws changing.

It is all political b.s. The administration has the power to change some minor procedures, but the law has not changed.

there is a set of very specific countries that are restricted, but the u.k. is not one of them.

in fact most countries, even after the law changes, that will probably not change also if they have any sort of free trade agreement or reciprocity agreement with chile.

Check the cost of the visas available to you. Cost varies by nationality and UK (Reino Unido) is most expensive. Just to know.

Thanks so much for your help!

So two hypothetical situations:
1) I go to Chile on a tourist visa, I can then look for work and then go and obtain a temporary work visa?

2) I go to Chile on a tourist visa, I can then apply immediately for residency (Visa Temporaria?)

Are either of these situations possible?

yep, pretty much. you have to read the forum to get the details on how those work, but pretty much all the info is still valid going back to the start of the forum.

The Chilean consulate in London has just told me that now it’s not possible change my tourist visa to a temporary one, so now I’m all sorts of confused.

Did you understand all the comments on the incorrect info often given out by the consulates and embassies?

Remember, they are a separate branch of the government (Foreign Relations Ministry) than who you would be dealing direct if inside Chile (Extranjería).

See the Extranjería site for the requisites for the differing temporary visas:

There are two ways to be fooled.

One is to believe what isn't true;

the other is to refuse to believe what is true.

Ok, sorry, I’m just new to this, and desperate not to be caught out by some technicality.

Are the new laws stuck in Congress likely to become official any time soon?

it has been stuck in congress for nearly 30 years, in one form or another. I would not recommend holding your breath. even if it does pass, almost 100% guaranteed to be bad or badly implemented. probably years before they would iron out all the problems with implemting it.
