Re: Somewhat OT - Cusco to Bogota

Thanks for your suggestions, Wiscondinavian and Hightower. Sadly not working in this case. Being aware of the strange habit of South American airlines charging more for singles than returns, we have used this stunt on previous visits. I checked the cost for a return and at one time it was more than ...

Re: Somewhat OT - Cusco to Bogota

We'll be travelling at the beginning of May and have been quoted a minimum of £303 one-way.
My flights from London to Santiago and Bogota to London via Miami are only £627.
Cheerz,

Somewhat OT - Cusco to Bogota

:?: We are coming to Chile again next year and will be working our way up through Chile and Peru to Cusco. From there we have to get to Bogota but the flights seem ridiculously expensive. Is there a reason for this ? Can I pick your collective brains and ask if anybody out there knows an inexpensive...

Re: Water shortages in Atacama villages

I think that prior to the relatively recent use and pollution of water by the mining organisations there was sufficient water, just, for these settlements to survive. Each year there is usually quite a lot of snow on the Andes and a lot of it melts. That water had to go somewhere. This article http:...

Re: Water shortages in Atacama villages

I checked the video again and it mainly features Quillaga which has been very badly affected by the pollution of the Loa, as per frozen-north's message. "An article about the contamination of the Rio Loa: La muerte del Río Loa por el xantato y detergentes http://www.noalamina.org/mineria-latino ... ...

Re: Water shortages in Atacama villages

I took another look at the program, which I had recorded, and they definitely say that the village is at the river Loa. However, the voice-over was almost certainly done thousands of miles away from Chile and whoever wrote it might have thought that because so much had been made about the pollution ...

Re: Water shortages in Atacama villages

I couldn't find the village on Google or Bing maps which are almost entirely useless for most of Chile and the village was clearly too small to show on my motoring map. What is the name of the village? Chanavaya. The program was one of a series on the Eden channel, all about the world's deserts. It...

Re: Water shortages in Atacama villages

Admin says "If you don't like the heat, get out of the dessert" but the indigenous population were in the desert long before the mining companies arrived and over many years their ancestors had constructed irrigation channels which permitted crops to grow in an otherwise arid area. The mining compan...

Re: Water shortages in Atacama villages

There is this: http://www.law360.com/articles/460157/bhp-rio-to-sink-3b-into-chilean-water-desalination-plant July 25, 2013, 4:50 PM ET -- Australia-based BHP Billiton Ltd. and other owners of one of Chile's largest copper mines on Thursday greenlighted an investment of nearly $3 billion for a new ...

Re: Water shortages in Atacama villages

I posted my initial message before doing any internet research. I've now done some and I see that, not surprisingly, there is some general disquiet about the drinking water situation and that there are also worries on the part of the mining industry because of lower rainfalls in recent years. I foun...

Re: Water shortages in Atacama villages

A good reason to start construction of the desalination plants, then. The Israelis have pioneered the process, Chile just has to copy.
SOON !!!
