Re: Chilean traditional houses

That's interesting. It looks like a Polynesian long house. Thatch sheds rain quite well, so I would expect that house to be water proof, and the fluffy grass would provide insulation. Are thatched roofs used in Chile? They are fairly common in Uruguay, and they get noticeable rain in the winter there.

Completo, USA Style

One of the USA fast food places has been running an ad that always makes me think of all of you who think the completo is a bit too much. They are heavily promoting their new foot long hot dog topped with chili, cheese, jalapenos, onion, Frito corn chips, and chipotle sauce. It makes a completo, wit...

I think what Pinguin in telling us is that he is 100% Native American, and the rest of y'all can go home now, and take your toys with you.

Re: Introduction to Chile.

Are we voting? I have no objection to hearing about all the tourist sites and fun places to see. Sometimes, tourist sites are tourist sites specifically because they are worth seeing and I want to know where they are so I can see them. I would not go to a country, settle down , and never go more tha...

Re: Initiation to Chilean food.

The sandwiches looked perfectly fine to me. Much better than what you'd get at any fast food place in the USA. I can get a good sandwich in the USA but only at a fairly expensive sit-down restaurant. There are lots of bad burgers available. Anyone whose eating experience in the USA consisted of McYu...

Re: Thanksgiving Cooking in Chile

Just about any winter squash (hard shelled squash) can be used to make pumpkin pie. You may find that they are out of season right now. They are ready in late fall.

Re: Air Quality in Central & Southern Chile: chemtrails?

Lots of chemtrails in Santiago. The people are very well chemically controlled. That's why they walk around like zombies and there is no crime and no graffiti. Chemtrails aren't all that bad. However, if you wear your tinfoil hat in Santiago, you'll be safe. Except that there are a lot of UFOs hangi...

Re: Solar/Photovoltaic/Hybrid Demonstration Projects

I'm a big fan of composting, but I have to say, it isn't as easy as it sounds. I've been trying to compost all year and while I did get the organic matter to shrink down considerably, I never did get the pile to heat up, and after an entire year, I still don't have usable compost. It's supposed to b...

Re: Hello from Pinguin

Technology for alternative energy is improving at a fast pace. While the knowledge isn't there, yet, it is getting there, and it won't be much longer. Chile has several resources that might end up providing non-fossil fuel energy. Chile has sun, wind, tides, rivers, and it has to be an ideal place t...

Re: light fixtures

It's not Chile, but in the UK, which is also on 220 electric, all I had to do for my lamps was to change the plug and find a place that sold 220 light bulbs that would screw into my lamps. Light bulb connections were not the same, but I was able to find screw-in 220 light bulbs at a lighting shop. L...
