Re: Advice/car type for Carretera Austral/Punta Arenas

My husband and I and two like-minded (ie. hard-travelled) friends made this trip in Jan 2008. It took us 3 weeks of very hard driving to go there and back. We were lucky to have experienced a Patagonian heatwave - low 30's everyday. It made for spectacular views, no clouds or rain, and supremely ple...

Re: New banking possibility in Santiago.

I too hope that this is not a 'flash-in-the-pan' success story - and that they continue to give the excellent service (to everyone) that we have experienced since arriving here in 2007. BTW, it might be worth mentioning that we were not then and are still not Scotiabank clients in Canada, only here ...

Re: Maps

I seem to remember that there were several booths in the (otherwise not too interesting) Feria Santa Lucia craftsmarket in Santiago that sold old maps. Hope this is still the case. Have fun poking around! But keep your valuables well hidden - the area apparently is a pickpocket zone !

New banking possibility in Santiago.

As far as I understand, newcomers to Chile usually encounter varying degrees of difficulty when trying to open a bank account here. But our experience has been quite the opposite; we have had a very good experience with the Scotiabank in Santiago. They have been exceedingly accomodating and have gon...

Re: Yogurt

Hope this is not considered advertising - it is meant simply as information... Someone was asking about electric yoghurt makers in this forum recently. I have just received an email from a store in Portal La Dehesa (top floor) - I believe it is called MarketHouse, they say they now have them in stoc...

Re: Internet .... at last!

Thanks, ZerOnz! One of these two options might just be the answer to our prayers. Will try to make a trip to Santiago to go in to see Blackbox in person. Just to be sure that all the elements work together. But the wireless router sounds like an excellent idea too. I will post when I have succeeded ...

Re: Internet .... at last!

48 hours later... Yes, we have tested it and Skype and VOIPStunt both work well with this system ( by the way, we are located in the Central Valley about 30 kms east of Curico towards the mountains). Our neighbours, who had almost no cell phone signal at all, have tried our system and it works for t...

Internet .... at last!

I felt that I should post this since it may be of help to someone else who suffers the same Internet withdrawal that we have been suffering out here in the 'campo'. When I last posted I mentioned that I had no Internet connection at home here in the foothills of the Andes, nor do we have phone servi...

Happily settled in Region VII

Apologies to the admin. I hadn't thought to introduce myself before posting a question in one of the forums ... but better late than never. Tho I was born in Chile (in Chuquicamata, of ex-pat parents), I had left as an infant and had never returned to see the country of my birth. So in early 2007, m...

Re: Art Suppies in Santiago

Helibel, Thank you for your suggestion - it was incredibly successful : Within minutes of my email to the Golden website I had an answer (see the three locations listed below ) and even received an additional email from the International Sales Director with confirmation that these stores still exist...

Re: Art Suppies in Santiago

Thanks for the answers - so fast!!! Just to clarify - and correct the typo in the header, I am looking for painting supplies - watercolour & acrylic paints, brushes, canvasses - rather than "works of art" . I would be happy to check the Yellow Pages if I were in Santiago but I am not - and where I l...
