Re: life in Algarrobo

Honestly, we're here mostly because my mom built a summer cottage out here ages ago, long before it became popular. We decided to escape the Canadian winters and no rent is by far the best, so we decided to try it out here. It was more of an experiment than anything. I hadn't been here in over a doz...

Re: Chile: country of street dogs

SANTIAGO.- Una terrible muerte encontraron Patricia Araneda Lobos (56) y Loreto Saavedra Araneda (25). Madre e hija salieron de su casa a ver una pelea entre sus perros y otros canes, en ese momento fueron atacadas por los animales del vecino. [/i] I'm just quoting here, but I think it's worth noti...

Re: life in Algarrobo

San Alfonso is only open to it's residents (or those who rent from them) not the general public and it's quite the monstronsity. As for Algarrobo, it's a VERY sleepy town. To the point that alot of people that live there head over to El Quisco (2 minutes away, not as nice) because there are more res...

Re: A question and a tangent

I used to live in Chicago as well and the banning of spray paint sales in the city proper was a brilliant piece of legislation. If only they could do the same for sharpies, at least for people riding the 'El' train. Which leads me to my question, I'm fascinated by the Santiago metro and how the insi...

Re: ATM fee

To the above poster, Yes . The Chilean banks charge you for the dubious honour of using their machine, and more often than not, your home bank charges you for not using theirs (the fact that you're on a different continent is irrelevant to them). That being said, if your home bank is part of the Glo...

Re: Stuff I Can't Find

Well hello fellow Canuck, Calgary and TO represent here ;) Regarding the brown sugar, I have yet to find any 'real' brown sugar. I have found the golden sugar in the health food sections at Tottus or Jumbo, but never the dark stuff you would use for awesome chocolate chip cookies and such. Have neve...

Re: An AMERICAN IN CHILE ON A TOURSIT VISA

We've been here just over a year now and have gone to Argentina twice, gotten a visa extension twice. Cost us $50 000 pesos and change both times. The Santiago office was friendly enough, it just took forever. The second time, we went to the Extranjeria in Llolleo and it was completely painless, ver...

Re: Beer in Chile

HA HA HA, so true, not to worry, I grew up going to Curacavi (my granny lived there and my favourite Aunt still does). I have had the chicha before. When I was little, I remember the incredible stench that permeated the street when the neighbors would start making it. It took people a long time to c...

Re: Beer in Chile

Ha ha, for sure! I'm actually heading into Santiago this weekend, we want to try to catch a movie. I really enjoy Kross 5, they have a couple brews that help lessen the pain of not being able to get Guinness regularly  I hit the pubs in Bellavista whenever I get a chance, I really like Celtika....

Re: Bringing my dog to UK without quarantine

I had a friend who moved to Ireland to work for Google and had to plan well in advance in order to take his cat. He was going from Canada who is one of the pet passport members for the UK, however Ireland would not accept that. He was able to get her in by taking her through England however. Apparen...

Re: Allow myself to introduce ... myself

I've found the generic brand rice krispies at Jumbo that were pretty good for not having elves on the front ;) Marshmallows, it's crazy you know, because we live in El Quisco where you can't get any-bloody-thing, but you can get marshmallows here. They're usually white and pink, with the pink being ...

Re: Iphone/Ipad

You can get the iPhone and pretty much any other phone unlocked all over the place here in Chile. I can think of a handful of places in San Antonio, so Santiago is bound to have tons of places to have it done. I had to get a crappy little Samsung from Canada jailbroken a few weeks ago when my smartp...
