Re: moving to chile from an american school

It will depend on the school, but: Some schools either allow or require profiency exams to decide what grade a child should be placed in, especially if said child is entering from a non-equivalent school system. The private schools all have their own policies in this regard. Best advice, check with ...

Re: School

Our school started March 5th and will have vacation from the 16th-27th of July this year. Many schools in Serena started the week before that, but I don't know their vacation schedules, which do indeed vary from school to school along with every other scheduling detail. Seriously, momof3, nobody at ...

Re: MRI scan in Chile

Oh yeah, waiting time--my husband got an appointment within a week of the day he asked, (no urgency in our case) and there was almost no wait at the lab, just a few minutes (much better than going to the doctor's office!). We also received a written analysis by the MRI spine specialist and a CD of t...

Re: MRI scan in Chile

Here in downtown La Serena near the hospital there is a little lab that just does MRI scans, with modern equipment and specialists to analyze the scans. My husband went in about six months ago for a lower back scan, it was about $500 dollars (I forget the exact peso amount). The subsequent 10 weeks ...

Giant Magellan Breaking Ground

Well, despite the lousy economy and the high prices for heavy construction work up here in region IV, the Giant Magellan Telescope team has started leveling the mountaintop at Las Campanas peak in preparation for eventual construction of the telescope enclosure. We are the first of three proposed ex...

Re: UV Index in Chile

My family is also fair-skinned and we spend plenty of time outside in the summer in La Serena--in the early mornings and late afternoons we don't even need sunscreen. During peak UV hours (about 11 am to 4 PM) we cover up and/or sunscreen thoroughly, (and don't forget the UV sunglasses) or stay in t...

Re: Empty Matchboxes

I have to buy matchboxes every year for some school craft project or other. We use maybe 20 matches a year? So if you are looking for a use for your empty small matchboxes, by all means donate them to your local school.

Re: What do you like about Chile

For all of us with young children at home... thank heavens we can afford someone to help out with the housework here! and the kids are growing up bilingual the food is overall better quality (I don't miss factory-farmed meat and eggs) the culture is very child-friendly there is less violent crime th...

Re: Paso de aguanegra (La Serena,Chile - San Juan, Arg)

You shouldn't have any trouble finding lodging on those dates in/around La Serena/Elqui Valley, high season will be over by then, and this year you could find something last-minute even high season, with most of the Argentine tourists staying away. I haven't been all the way over the pass but I have...

Re: Stupid question..

Try the La Preferida panceta instead of tocino, we switched to that after sampling several bacon varieties for our Sunday pancake-and-bacon fest. Santa Rosa makes a cheddar that I would describe more or less as American-style (a thin block of cheese, not the individually-wrapped sandwich slices, yuc...

I think she was referring to the "solo para uso interior," meaning the lights won't stand up to any significant atmospheric moisture. Although if it was dry out when the lights failed, you should still be able to blame the manufacturer....

Re: Need a Dentist Reccomendation

About splitting the cleaning into multiple visits-- my estimate was based on a total amount of cleaning rather than how many visits it was done in, how many "areas" of the mouth she had to do (and since I was a moderate case, she cleaned all my teeth but only charged me for 2/3 or so. She actually s...
