Re: Landed a year ago as of tomorrow.

We've been here almost six years now; every year or two my husband and I talk about how we feel about staying vs. returning. Top reason for staying is definitely that it's better for the kids. California schools are definitely on the downturn. I can't afford a nana in California. And they wouldn't g...

rating online banking

I noticed over in the Thorn Tree section someone complaining about how difficult it is to do an online transfer from her bank. We haven't been that happy with our online service at Banco de Chile either, so I was curious if this was the standard, or if there might be something better out there. Banc...

Re: Need images and info on traditional clothing in the nort

It is the idiosyncrasies of how school life is handled that drive me to my Baileys and or Bacardi. Yes, it is a bit of a shock especially the first couple of years. When my oldest daughter first entered jardin they handed me a page-long list of stuff to buy, half of which I had no idea what it was ...

Re: Need images and info on traditional clothing in the nort

If you are going there anyway for those Fiestas Patrias costumes for your kids' school shows, you might ask at the costume store (tienda de disfraces). They will know better than Google, exactly what your child's teacher means by "traditional Northern clothing." I would also suggest your child pick ...

Re: Desierto Florido 2012

I wouldn't really recommend this year as a "desierto florido" touring choice. Years with heavy rain ( locally speaking anyway) are generally considered to be the best. This year in El Norte Chico not only are we still at around 25% of average rainfall with no guarantee of more, but the rains came ve...

No blue plate voters! We could have our own micro-demonstration. Banging on blue license plates instead of pots. Or throw them on a pile of burning tires.

Of course we have, it's just weird diplomatic frequently renewed temp residency. We are among the blue-plate license folk, we have a whole different subset of rules that apply just to us, all handled by the foreign ministry. (Lucky us...)

Re: 5+ year residents, will you vote in Chile?

Has anyone else received a notice in the mail informing them that they are eligible to vote? The postman came by yesterday with white paper slips that had something to do with voting, which seemed to be for all the people who had ever previously lived at our address (4 or 5). I confirmed that these...

Re: Respiratory therapist jobs

The cold damp air in winter here in La Serena does mean we have a relatively high rate of respiratory infections in that season and people (esp. kids) with athsma. The population is also growing steadily here, implying a need for more health care workers of all kinds.

Re: The Dry Topic

There is a cloud seeding plane on standby at the airport? There are storm drains in La Serena? The cloud seeding plane is new this year. Watching the reservoir levels fall over the past few years has not been fun for anyone living here, especially if they farm or raise livestock. So far it has made...

Re: The Dry Topic

Here in La Serena it is dry. It has been dry since last winter. The reservoir is almost dry. The cloud-seeding plane is waiting at the airport. Still waiting. My roof is very dusty. No rain clouds today. My hair crackles with static when I brush it. The city is all done cleaning the storm drains. Th...

Re: Chile Census 2012, have you been contacted?

They finally found us at home last Friday. Well, my husband was home. I was out delivering a kid to a birthday party. Someone came by previously a week and a half before, left a "we were here and we'll be back at x date" notice on the ground outside my parking area gate with the other trash that dri...
