Re: Negotiating school tuition in order to relocate to Chile

I got curious how much more expensive Santiago schools are than here in La Serena, so here is Deutsche Schule Santiago for 2012: Cuota de Incorporacion 48 UF (about $2200 dollars, 36 UF for additional children) Matricula 183.000 (about $400) tuition: prekinder 10 cuotas of $296.900 (about $6500 annu...

Re: Preschool/nursery in Chile

When I arrived I also had a baby and a 3 year old. We went with Spanish immersion, and it went just fine. Usually Chileans will know at least a few words of English, which helps while you and your child are adapting. Sure there will be misunderstandings, sometimes maddening, sometimes hilarious. But...

Re: flavor

The only cut of beef I have ever seen here with a bone in it is ribs.

I have seen pastrami in Unimarc in the packaged deli cuts, but it was too expensive for me to want to buy it at the level of quality the prepackaged stuff usually has (nothing wrong with it but nothing special either).

Re: Where to buy in Chile? HELP!!

In the La Serena/Coquimbo area, what you describe can be found in La Herradura or possibly in Coquimbo itself if you don't mind being near downtown. Most other areas here only have a beach view from the apartments or are much farther than a kilometer from the beach. La Herradura is mostly small to m...

Re: Macaroni and Cheese no longer in Lider Maipu... :(

I haven't bought any lately so I haven't looked, but I have seen "real" mac&cheese in Jumbo in the past year (usually in the pasta section, also check imports), and I don't mean the local "caracoles con queso". I can't remember seeing it, but worth checking Unimarc too in pasta and import sections o...

Re: How fair is the U.S. election?

Not fair until ballots can be counted (and recounted) publicly and with a physical record of each vote. And better-designed chad-free ballots. And better electronic voting machines if you have to use the darn things.

Re: The Great Pumpkin

Last year was the first time I saw lots of imported pumpkins in the store in October (Santa Isabel for sure, not sure about Jumbo/Unimarc but I know I saw them in two different stores), right around Halloween. Whether or not they reappear this year will probably depend on how they sold last year.......

Re: Humiliated

Hi momof3, I know how you're feeling! I have a hard time with the way things are communicated sometimes because so many things seem to be picked up "out of the air," with older parents passing information verbally down to newer, and if you are out of the social loop, you are going to feel very lost!...
