Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

Call me old-fashioned, but I think children should have a little bit of fear of their parents and their teachers and the police. Love and respect and fear are not incompatible. Managing all of that is one of the tricky parts of parenting, and managing a classroom, and policing. Basic child psycholog...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

The PDI may not be technologically advanced for hacking, but I believe they have always been good at infiltrating groups and pretending to be one of them. But as for social media, the government and police seem to be completely lost on how to use it to their advantage. They should outsource job tha...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

right now they are attacking a police station. several carbinareios injured. my fear with what is going on right now, between the ever more brazen attacks directly on the carbinareios on the one hand, and the politicians going to ground in the other hand to wash their hands of whatever the carbinar...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

I was able to get to Conce today, stop by Sodimac, get to work, teach my two classes and get back home without too much trouble, but it's clear that things are not normal. Sodimac was open, but the Lider next door was closed, and access to that complex was restricted, only one of three gates was ope...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

The protest organizers certainly have some legitimate gripes, but they should come up with different ways of protesting that don't interrupt general commerce.....maybe they should take some lessons from Gandhi and King....sit-ins at city hall or regional offices, for example, perhaps calling for boy...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

When I say "far left" or "far right", basically I am talking about people who are willing to use violence to advance their political agendas. As for my i-Phone comment, you are right, they have many pressing concerns and feel that the government has been unresponsive to their need and the needs of t...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

I have been having a debate for several day with my gf. She grew up under the Pinochet regime and has vivid memories of bread lines and military control of the streets. She is entertaining the idea that much of this chaos is a power grab by the right. Their hope is that the rioting will continue and...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

Speaking of wankers.....quote below from José Piñera, minister of Labor and Social Security, and Minister of Mining, in Pinochet's military dictatorship, elder brother of current president Sebastian Piñera, and principal architect of the Chilean pension system that pays out benefits to retired worke...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

will 1% of Santiago students have no school for the rest of the year? or 10%, or 50% or 90%? Most schools will finish the school year, probably 99%+ (unless we see a lot more rioting). Some high schools and universities have had prolonged protests all year and were already scheduled to extend their...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

A few key points from the Navia article I posted earlier: The Chilean constitution is hard to change, but it can be, and has been, changed many times. Many of the most undemocratic aspects of the original Pinochet (1980) constitution have already been changed. Super-majority means 60% (not 67%) The ...
