Re: If the internet stopped, what would you want a copy of?

I'd offer ebooks like "When there is no doctor" or "when there is no dentist" as candidates. I'd also suggest good old-fashioned hardback/softback books. I found a complete hardback set - like 30 books or something - on every time of home repair, electricity, plumbing, etc. at a used book store in M...

OFAC Issue & Global Sanctions

Just a from the front lines report .... We have accounts in the USA and in Chile in our names. We regularly wire funds from X to Y, same accounts, same names, everything documented. We know the drill, keep it transparent, file taxes, forms, disclosures, etc. We are/were teachers in the US, so all th...

Re: Virtual Phone Number - Recommendations?

I use Google Voice. It takes a voice message and emails me a voice file and a transcript free. Gmail forwards the message to my main account where I see it right away and call back. I was able to select the area code for the phone number and chose one that corresponds to a location in the US that ma...

Re: maestros: labor cost per m2?

"Do you have to hire a licensed electrician, construction engineer, or architect" (or something like that). IMHO and experience, yes - but when and where you do that varies a lot. Town house (Pto Montt), certified electrician who then brought in a licensed electrician at the inspection point of the ...

Re: maestros: labor cost per m2?

Anticipate at some point being asked for an "advance" - family emergency, something ... and address the issue before you put down the steps in writing (framing, electricity, passing inspection) - whatever benchmarks you use to divide the job into steps with incremental payments. Anticipate the advan...

Re: maestros: labor cost per m2?

As a point of reference: We did a 30m/sq addition to our town home in beautiful Pto Montt for 3M (labor) w/electricity, inspections, everything up to code, plans for the municipality, etc. The job included a small renovation of a bodega that wasn't finished (interior walls, redo electricity, redo pl...

Re: leaving Chile with children but not their dad

We've done it many times - Lisa goes with the kids, I stay here to mind the greenhouse. We get the notarized permission within the time frame and put all of the information in it - flight number, leaving, return, etc. - and then pack the same docs you have on your list, and they check everything, bu...

Re: Expat community in Puerto Varras / Puerto Montt

We're in Valle Volcanes, Puerto Montt (American School, Patagonia College, & the Chileno NorteAmericano) during the week, campo on the weekends. Puerto Varas has its charms but we made the call after checking out all the schools. FWIW/DYODH

Re: Expats in Concepcion, Chile

Search is your friend! I've written about this all before. We did the late 90's in Concepcion - I was the principal of the Thomas Jefferson School - good town, but a big city. Lots of info on Concepcion already on this board. We're outside of Puerto Montt now by choice - and do have a town house for...

Re: New Member

No harm in dreaming but check it out in person to get a sense of reality. We've addressed your question before in depth, in detail, on this forum. Search is your friend. We're 40 minutes south of Puerto Montt and reliable internet service took more than a bit of work - it is better now, but still is...

Re: Caught a fox (zorro) in Southern Chile

It's a fox. We see them from time to time out here - but we're out of the way, so not a big surprise - still uncommon enough to take notice. Congratulations! No idea on whether it's female - but where there is one ... Suggestion: Barbed wire 20cm below the ground and big rocks around the chicken coo...
