Small to medium shake near Osorno overnight

Anyone else in the south feel the shake last night ? The sound woke me and all the birds squawking, half asleep so was hard to judge length (maybe 10 seconds to me it felt like) felt a decent side to side motion, remembered the time and went back to sleep, remembering to check this morning to.make s...

Re: The Pinera administration 2.0

Yeah I knew Piñera was never going to be the man and so does the rest of Chile , let's just hope he only bumbles along and doesnt screw up too badly as a placeholder until someone better comes along. So I wonder then if the rest of the continent is so screwed , shouldnt that give Chile more of an in...

Re: Chile: second run

No, zero duty paid on last 2nd hand book, it was only 1cent, does that make a difference vs a 2 dollar book? And it was earlier this year.

Re: Chile: second run

to 41southchile - how are you getting by without paying duty??? I have been buying second hand books for years for just a few bucks and having them shipped here. Used to be that less than $30 paid no duty - but this year I've been getting dinged by customs every time. For example, on a $6 book I pa...

Re: The Pinera administration 2.0

So the title of this thread? Piñera 2.0 what do people think so far? In one word I would say , underwhelming . Same old same old, of everything, the screw ups, the perception he is looking after his business buddies and families, the list is quite long, they maybe " tiempos mejores" but that wasnt h...

Re: Housing market situation

Housing prices are quite crazy, from what I can see. I was checking the prices of apartments in some areas of Vitacura and they were selling in the USD $300,000 to $450,000 range. The same places are being rented for CLP $600,000 to $900,000 - which is USD $900 to $1400. The numbers don't make sens...

Re: Chile: second run

Christmas shopping done in August on Amazon and AliExpress is even more comfortable than roaming local stores in attempts to find similar items for at least 2-3x price. (By the way, watch out for overpriced items on Amazon that cost 2-5x less on AliExpress for absolutely the same thing, probably ev...

Re: Chile Wealth, Inequality, and International rankings

This grim chart is circulating on Reddit but fear not, according to the original OECD's report on the country's skills, "Younger adults in Chile are more proficient in literacy and numeracy than their older counterparts – by a larger margin than on average across OECD countries." 5bztAvM.jpg At fir...

Re: Chile Wealth, Inequality, and International rankings

oooooowww, this scandal is going to stick, like frigen napalm. They discovered someone at the national statics office manipulated the august and September 2018 inflation numbers, that feeds in to the IPC, that sets the UF, which pretty much sets everything else in the country. Pretty much anything ...

Re: rising anti-immigration politics in the Chilean Election

Not so many immigrants in the south where I am yet. People's opinions are mainly driven by what they see on the news. From my own perspective, the immigrants from Venezuela seem to be entering Chile legally. So I think its great that they can escape a bad situation in their own country. Hats off to...
