Re: Where Should I Start?

Yep, keep relating what you experienced, it´s interesting.

Ignore the trolling, reacting only gives it oxygen.

Re: Where Should I Start?

Indeed a good writer and we were invited to comment, just keep it polite. In all fairness peoples experiences, memories and ultimate judgements of the dictatorship are incredibly varied even within Chilean families, but it´s always interesting to hear them.

Keep going El Puelche...

Re: Where Should I Start?

I agree, tell it from your perspective and recollection El Puelche, it´s interesting. However after searching long and hard I couldn´t find any reference anywhere to a communist "museo" much less 850 caps. I thought perhaps it was propaganda which grew legs, the old tell a lie often enough and it be...

Re: Where Should I Start?

In one of the histories I read on the era it stated that El Mercurio was almost broke due to mis-management by the family which owned it, was rescued by the CIA and under its patronage, "guideance" and financial support got back on to its feet.

Re: Where Should I Start?

Thank you! That sounds a lot more like the Chile that I know of :) Now, where would I go to meet a stranger who'd give me one of those trademark long Chiean stares that you mentioned? Are they an extinct breed? :) Its not a part of the culture anymore I don't think------everyone in Chile did this ba...

Re: Que hora son mi corazon, daylight savings time

No different in Australia though it´s a state by state decision. Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia don´t have daylight saving, the general consensus being their Summer evenings are hot enough without adding another hour of sunshine. In Western Australia it´s been tried then af...

Re: Housing market situation

Not only Chile, it´s no better in Australia where many politicians got there via the party machine after being active in university politics and are eventually parachuted into a safe seat. They´ve never had a job relevant to their uni degree so are basically unemployable, suck on the public funded t...

Re: Housing market situation

Up to date Occupational Health & Safety Laws if they´re followed and enforced generally address the higher workload/productivity issues. In a previous life I spent years investigating industrial accidents and injuries but those laws had to further evolve over time as unforeseen hazards and incidents...

Re: Housing market situation

I haven´t been following the 40hr week debate but normally a negotiated reduction in working hours is traded off with higher productivity on the part of employees. Is that in the mix, or do people just want more time off? Eg. the Coca Cola truck. In a developed country the driver does everything, dr...

Re: Chile Wealth, Inequality, and International rankings

I´ve been told by a couple of people something nobody likes to talk about, but in the early 1980´s things were so grim the street dogs disappeared. There´s no way to put it delicately, they were eaten. They were referring specifically to Valdivia. True or not I don´t know but it´s not mentioned in a...

Re: Argentina Economy, Election, and possible default?

One story, it´s bed time for me... I know a hotel owner who detests foreign guests but employed a bilingual receptionist "to make more money". She fired her 3 months later for speaking too much English. She felt threatened by the perception her receptionist was "taking control". Culture again...
