Re: Market crash! We have another Black Monday

LATAM cried for help from the Chilean states despite having only 15% of profits in the country (39% in Brazil, 10% in the US). Luckily, the economy minister just teased them in response: https://www.biobiochile.cl/noticias/economia/negocios-y-empresas/2020/03/17/ministro-palacios-critica-peticion-de...

Re: Market crash! We have another Black Monday

...but try to propose public healthcare or college and every US right-winger* goes full "HOWUGONPAYFORIT" mode.

* including the "moderate democrats"

By the way, still no US elections thread this time!

Re: Plebiscite

I mostly read Chilean news and social media but post English sources here because not all forum members speak Spanish well. You wrote before about running a tourist business and hiring people, so I doubt that you live at the level of the D or E socio-economic groups (49% of the population, CL$ 320-5...

Re: Plebiscite

Because it is a socio-economic problem of a country stuck in the middle income trap. That's why as much as 80% of the population were supporting the protests even according to the conservative polls. And that's why it's so obvious to the foreign media: the current situation happened in most develope...

Re: Plebiscite

I'm not mentioning the same person in dozens of my forum posts, so I'm neither. I don't even know all of his positions but I'm glad he annoys so many people at once. A good court jester who "insults" the government is always welcomed.

Re: Plebiscite

Your hate against Florcita Motuda is irrational: he one of the few deputies with 100% session attendance in 2019 and he consistently votes along his humanistic beliefs.

I prefer the function over the form, so I'd take 100 florcitas instead of all the overpaid slackers in suits.

Re: coronavirus (COVID-19) in Chile

Stopping flights from the European countries but not from the public healthcare trainwreck of the United States was a big mistake. The government should follow Argentina's example and drop all the flights from North America. If you don't have food and medicine for a month, buy it today. If they miss...

Re: Plebiscite

Why obsess with "socialists" when even right-wing The Economist supports a new constitution: In an effort to placate popular anger Sebastián Piñera, the embattled president, struck an agreement to hold a plebiscite on April 26th on whether to set up an assembly to write a new constitution. Mr Piñera...

Re: Plebiscite

My issue with this whole thing is that most of the things that people are complaining about are all defined and controlled by other laws, not the constitution. AFPs, Isapres, pensions, public transportation are all ruled by laws and decrees, not by the constitution. Thus, it's possible to change th...

Re: The new constitutional vote and the social crisis

Hey everyone, new to the forum, long-time lurker Hi there, totally agree with you, the Chilean neoliberalism sucks ass even from the purely right-wing technocratic point of view. The country is an oligopoly ruled by rent-seeking elites, their short-sightedness and failure to modernize have lead us ...

Re: Chile - U.S. Double Tax Treaty: We got a copy

Half of the pending tax treaties were approved in July but not the Chilean one: “This action will reduce double taxation of businesses operating internationally, enhance the global competitiveness of U.S. companies, and make the United States a more attractive destination for investment," said Neil ...

Re: CRAZY PHONE CALLS, and THE CHILEAN MAIL

After reading this article, I've come up with a pet theory to explain why the US produce so many crazies: The medications that change who we are He had diabetes, and he had signed up for a study to see if taking a “statin” – a kind of cholesterol-lowering drug – might help. So far, so normal. But so...
