Re: Decided to leave this forum to its own devices

Everyone go read this: http://www.allchile.net/chileforum/post86968.html I did. All very clear. Now, since pedantry is also an established and respected internet-based activity (much like flouncing out of forums), I'd like to point out that in #4 of the Terms of Use Notices, 'curtious' should be 'c...

Re: Getting stuff sent to Chile : import taxes?

The process went a bit like this: - Parcel is at post office but cannot be given until we pay the monies asked in the Importacion Via Postal form that is attached to it - Phone post office, explain we don't wish to import anything; it's just our tent - Post office says clearly that they have nothing...

Re: Weird dog combinations

I think eating lemons is the worse offence. They think that they'll be able to live their life out, and when they die and fall from the tree they'll fulfill some greater purpose, but in reality they're plucked from the tree in their prime of life, just to sit in a bowl in the middle of summer and g...

Re: Getting stuff sent to Chile : import taxes?

So, it turns out that if you ask really nicely, and you go to Santiago to repeat the request even more nicely in person, then you can get things brought in as temporary tourist stuff, even after the fact. The tent is on its way, the sleeping bag and pack saddles are here, last two packages clearing ...

Re: Getting stuff sent to Chile : import taxes?

I have my hands on the importation-via-post document: in fact the numbers are wrong but not by much. They're charging the 6% three times. By correct calculations, IF we agreed that I'm importing it (which we don't), then I'd have to pay CIF 190,000. Which, let's face it, isn't much better. I am goin...

Re: Getting stuff sent to Chile : import taxes?

It's not sent by the manufacturer but by the shop where we bought it. Thanks, FrankPintor, for the email address - we will try. Sigh. Buying the horses was supposed to be the hard bit of this trip...

Getting stuff sent to Chile : import taxes?

Bit of a horror story with our tent. Briefly, we were supposed to have it with us when we arrived. Didn't arrive in the UK in time for that. Provider sent it - it's been AWOL for a month, now has turned up at the local post office. Can't have it unless we pay 250,000 CIF. Which would make the tent j...

Re: Hello to all and to Chile

Given that we'll have a packhorse on the end of a bit of string each, we'll probably not go for swinging a long bit of leather around. So far we've found that the majority of dogs bugger off when you ride at them - I suppose we'll deal with the minoritu when we get to them. As for the roads issue, w...

Re: Hello to all and to Chile

Shame you have to spend time on public highways; .. This is a good opportunity to destroy some notions of those who have never been to Chile: Just about any part of the country you'd want to see, or that can be productive land, is already fenced, except for the Atacama and steep/inaccessible terrai...

Re: Hello to all and to Chile

Hi Red Nope, not heading for Patagonia - at least not this time. Heading into Argentina then north practically straight away - IF the SAG let us do our initial quarantine here rather than in Santiago. If they insist on Santiago then we'll be crossing over towards Mendoza. Vet is for vaccinations, bl...

Murf, thanks for the heads up, I just saw the sticky - I guess that's why they write 'read this first'...
