Re: What was Chile like in the early to mid-sixties?

If the OP is still interested in the "bars and nightclubs" aspects of Stgo in the 1960s, there are accessible images and accounts of the "revistas" or "reviews" -- shows like the Bim Bam Bum. These were described in Stgo at the time as "Bohemian" but the term has various meanings so I am not sure t...

Re: What was Chile like in the early to mid-sixties?

The 60's is a rather remarkable period during which many of the cultural and political changes that you see in place today were beginning to germinate. Chile lacks good historians (its leaders never keep diaries, for example, and their "memoirs' are lousy and ''masajeadas''). Yeah, the extraordinar...

Re: What was Chile like in the early to mid-sixties?

This is possibly one of the most interesting questions I have seen in a long time in this forum. Many thanks SCL. (In this celebration of Resurrection week, are we celebrating the virtual resurrection of the Chilean wizard El Puelche after Lazarus rose from his virtual grave?) Let me start with num...

Re: What was Chile like in the early to mid-sixties?

Another fairly balanced historical account of the sixties period, including the judgement of one landowner that Frei was worse than Allende, because at least with the latter they knew what to expect.

Re: What was Chile like in the early to mid-sixties?

Cheers Rat, Here's some more nostalgia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaiWt7fvRzY Perhaps you could name the cities sequentially? A lot of what is on the youtube video looks very familiar even today. The big difference is the lack of graffiti in the older photos, which was certainly the case in tho...

Re: Your invented songs about Chilito

As I lay at night behind my chained gate and locked doors I seemed to hear echoing from the shrouded light A chorus of dogs Barking late That this land was made to come and see Wandering the dusty streets I stuffed my hands in my jacket but still stumbled on the cracked pavements When all at once I ...

Re: What was Chile like in the early to mid-sixties?

Many thanks Ratbert and Zenth for your replies; I suppose up until the early 1970s, things were pretty much the same... Appreciate the input, but 77-78 is a little late for my particular interest. Were trains fairly much functional prior to the golpe, eg entre Concepcion and Coronel? Did "bars" or "...

Re: What was Chile like in the early to mid-sixties?

Did touring options exist in that time, before 1970, up to the snowy heights?

Re: What was Chile like in the early to mid-sixties?

Would it have been possible to rent a car in the mid-sixties in Puerto Montt, and were the main tourist attractions in operation then, such as the cable car up to the snowy depths of the mountains?
