>>According to this site the tropical p. Carica does grow in the illoco region. chile flora dot com<<

The carica is the small Chilean papaya I mentioned. It is the large tropical papaya which can be eaten raw which is not grown here. Chilean papaya must be cooked.

Re: Where can I find all year Sunniest and Warmest area in Chile.

No worries. I just found out that they grow papayas in some areas of Chile. Papayas can't tolerate temps below 4 so maybe it's milder in that region. Do they grow coconuts up north? They are not tropical papayas and cannot be eaten raw. They also have them, strangely, in Arequipa. Google papaya chi...

Re: Housing market situation

I have a friend who lives in an enviously nice apartment in Providencia. She rents and so does everyone else in the building. The owners are a USA based group. This is the second large building which I have learned is entirely owned by foreign investors. I wonder how many others there are.

Re: Housing market situation

Perhaps it a throwback to the days of hyper-inflation, where real estate holders managed to hang on to their wealth, while everyone else took the hit. There is a possibly a cultural security factor to it. It is much the same throughout South America. Property was always considered the one safe inve...

Re: REPLACING CARNET 2017

Thanks, Donnybrook. I ended up making a couple of Web appointments for "renovacion Chileno" and taking the kids in this morning. There were also "bloqueo" and "reimpresion" options for the appointment, but their FAQs say 1) that if you do a "bloqueo permanente" at the RC, you then have to request a...

Re: Where can I find all year Sunniest and Warmest area in Chile.

If you look at a map of Chile you might think that it is prime beach country but it is not. The sea off Chile is very cold and this causes coastal mists in the morning even in summer. Inland you can avoid the damp and enjoy constant daytime sunshine - the Elqui valley, for instance - but night tempe...

I can only answer about the lost carnet. Lots of reports that you get issued a replacement in your municipality's Registro Civil office. It should have the same expiry date as the lost one.

Re: Homologacion de celulares

Are there any comparisons, in those forums, between Chile and other countries that have implemented the new requirement? No, not so far. That link refers to the stealing of phones not the import of stolen or illegal phones. There are already ways to register a locally bought phone here and the imei...

Re: Birth of Child

What usually happens is that the military fill available slots with volunteers. Like many countries, there are less advantaged people who view the military as an option as training for a career. The military can enforce the mandatory bit if they need to but I think it is years since that has happene...
