Re: Health Insurance -

I use Cruz Blanca and have done for years. The trouble is there are dozens of different plans. Mine has better coverage for hospital stays and lighter on the outpatient things. It suits me because of age etc. You can usually get advice at one of their offices. Mine is Santa Maria specific (more cove...

Don't know where they were hiding the plastic bottles in 1965 but we never saw them. It was all glass.

Re: Zero Visibility

It used to be fairly common in the 90s for flights to SCL to be rerouted to Mendoza because of poor visibility. I guess they then put in the automatic whatnot. You don't hear of it now.

>>Does anyone know well the roads going north from La Serena or into the Elqui valley as well?<< Last night in the news they said that the road to Vicuña will be exclusively to the east until 5pm, and exclusively to the west until 8pm. An email from UK.GOV said the road to Vicuña would be closed. I ...

Re: Possibly moving to Chile

It very much depends on individual ability with languages and how much you interact locally. People from the USA sometimes find it more difficult as they are exposed less often to other languages - aside from the states where there is a high Spanish speaking population, Europeans are more used to he...

Re: growing fruits and vegetables for sale, in a residential neighborhood

A lot of people do it in Santiago, even prepared meals, which they advertize on FB pages. The ones who do fresh fruit/veg prepare boxes with what is available for the week and sell like that rather than lettuce by lettuce. Some have been doing it for a long time so it must be worth their while but n...

Re: UK national wanting to move to Chile - What’s the best visa?

Check the cost of the visas available to you. Cost varies by nationality and UK (Reino Unido) is most expensive. Just to know.

Re: Canadian citizen stabbed to death in Valpo

The victim and his family were newly settled in Chile. So probably visas "en tramite", which is why he was described as a tourist. It has been devastating for the family, as it would be whatever their resident status, being in a country where they are not yet fully settled in. As new friends we are ...

Re: Argentina power outage

We had electricity back about 9 am after the 2010 earthquake and I think it varied widely even in Santiago. No water is actually worse than no electricity - as I learned during the multiple terrorist attacks in Peru in the 80s. We had ample opportunity to sample both, sometimes at the same time.

Re: Cellular phones

Firstly, use the link above to check compatibility. You would have to get it unlocked first. Chilean phones are unlocked for Chile only. If you bough the phone + a plan from Entel, Movitar etc. then they should be able to unlock it for you. If you bought the phone somewhere else (falabella, Jumbo etc...

Re: Connections with bilingual/international schools

Most schools in Chile are not bilingual although some do intensive teaching in English with the first school years. This varies in quality. The Mackay school in Reñaca (Viña del Mar) is a member of the British Schools in Chile but no subjects are taught in English in the older primary children or se...
