Re: LAN Will Have First Dreamliner Flights Into South America Starting July 2015
We flew with COPA as part of a (relatively) cheap-but-long way of getting to Chile from Australia. LAX-SCL and return. Had an 8(?) hour stopover in Panama on the way down, which suited us fine as we took the opportunity to escape the airport for an adventure around the city. The COPA experience was ...

My 2c, covering the last 6 months... I'm 195cm, 105kg Qantas A380 - LAX to Melbourne : Comfortable enough seats in economy with reasonable legroom. Managed to get a couple of hours sleep, which is unusual for me. Copa 737 : LAX to Santiago (and return) : Surprisingly comfortable. Good leg room! Qant...

Re: Wine of the week
¡Mish! I'd always been surprised not to have seen more (well, any) garnacha in Chile, along with the other Spanish varietals. Is that the only one you've come across? If there's more, would you care to mention them? They're moderately popular here in Oz, but perhaps require warmer climate than can b...

Re: Driving around Antofagasta/Atacama region
The first time I drove from Antofagasta to SPdA (2010), our average speed was probably not much more than 50kph. The road had large sections in horrible condition and there were signs indicating a maximum speed of something like 70kph, which of course everyone except me ignored. In 2012, the road wa...

Re: world cup 2014
Mixed feelings in our house! Las Chilenas were very nervous about losing/drawing right up to the last goal! Thankfully they aren't gloating too much (yet). The Aussies were certainly not expected to do very well here, but I think most will be pleased that we played better than expected. The next Wor...

Re: Toyota 4runner Diesel?
I had a 2010 4Runner while in Chile and like Seawolf, loved the thing and would strongly recommend it. Not the cheapest vehicle (fuel-wise) for tooling around town, but surprisingly economical cruising around the open roads and did it in great comfort. When looking to buy a 4WD, I ended up comparing...

Re: Auto multas
My experience is that you can only pay the fine directly in the 'city' where you committed the infringement (i.e. my parking ticket somehow acquired in Calama and no paperwork/advice attached to the car in any way), otherwise it is a long and convoluted process of organising and waiting for the pape...

Re: Bringing in wine by land?
I've crossed into Chile by land with at least a dozen bottles of wine/alcohol on (I think) 4 occasions. Twice at Paso de San Francisco (into Copiapo), once at San Pedro de Atacama and once at Arica-Tacna. The only place where I had any trouble was at San Pedro and because I begged stupidity at forge...

Re: Tur bus company
Aaaah, Tur Bus. Never had a problem when I used them between Santiago and Copiapo. Then I bought a car and started to see what they get up to from the outside of the bus. Adelante Tur Bus.JPG So, you'll be able to see that where the bus is at the moment of the photo is where the broken line begins a...

Re: Gas stations in BFE?
Bob, I'll just confirm that the info you have is correct - there is a nice, clean, modern petrol station on the Argentine side of the border crossing between SPdeA and Jujuy, pretty much next door to the Argentine border control. You are no doubt aware the the border control point is some distance f...

Re: My Last 30 days
Astute observation admin! It took me a good few months to get used to being back in Oz and I wasn't in Chile for nearly as long has Z has been. It was sort of foreign and familiar all at once. Z, should you ever get wildly lost and find yourself in Perth, I'd be happy to buy you are beer or two! Bes...
