Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

So, garbage collectors are on strike. It's almost 2020 and those folks keep breaking their backs because there's no automated garbage lift across the country. Their demands are much simpler though, for example to have an access to a WC : Hay una serie de cosas que el sistema no se hace cargo. Todo ...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019
The voting turnout is just slightly lower than in the US.
Seriously? US voting turnout is notoriously low. "De un total de 14.347.288 chilenos habilitados para sufragar en estas elecciones presidenciales, alrededor de 6.650.000 ejercieron su derecho a voto." that is a joke - how ca...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

Thanks Greg. Seems like there is a lot of preparation in terms of security going on in Eastern Santiago today. Right now it is completely calm in Las Condes though

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

Brother in law in lo barnachea said they are boarding up his apartment. Apparently people are throwing rocks/molotovs up there now? He is starting to get very worried. Is chile going to throw away everything and all its progress before new years? Increible... Do you have any more on this? Lo Barnec...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

Don't think it has been mentioned here, but garbage collectors have joined the strike in RM. No garbage collection in 42 municipalities.
Also, footballers on strike. No national game nor Chilean league.
Today is the 1 year anniversary of the death of Catrillanca. Could turn violent...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

After the clumsy speech and the declaration of getting the "recently retired" Carabineros back on the streets, the consensus online is that Piñera asked the military to step up for the Estado de Sitio (basically, martial law) but got a rejection. The most obvious evidence are the thousands of right...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

Blocking social media would affect both the peaceful and the violent protests and is thus not viable. Listen to anybody from government- they all emphasize the importance and legitimacy of the peaceful demonstrations. Of course they cannot block their means of communication

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

Are we over the hump now? A million plus demonstrators ...downhill from here? A US friend asked me about the stratification of chile...I guessed about thirds..33% lower class, 33% middle class, and 33% upper class. Is that close? Middle class being 30-60k usd a year? Not close. See this study from ...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

So trying to follow you thinking water and peace, then these protests are all just a ploy to get left to fight right to reduce the world population? Not doing very well are they though? What 19 dead so far... Yesterday they had a pretty damn good chance to make a real message. Get the military to ki...

Re: State of emergency and curfews, October 2019

Maybe the football is a factor.?? Your life may suck but when you beat the world champions at football in the world cup (2014) and win the Copa America (2015 and 2016) at least you have something to feel proud about it. And even when Chile are losing a bit more in the football (2017-2019) at least ...
