50% or less of what it costs to live in Santiago. Two bedroom apartment with all utilities including cable tv and internet $300 per month. Excellent restaurant meals $3-$6

I visited Chile with my wife for 5 weeks about a year ago and had several people who were native speakers of spanish from other SA countries ask me for directions around Santiago. when I finally asked one why he didn't ask a local instead of a gringito, he said "because I understand gringo spanish" ...

A year ago I brought a 24" lcd monitor in my checked bag. They spotted it in the Xray when I went through customs and she asked what it was for. I told her it was for my mac-mini and it was a used one. She said ok no problem.
