Re: Chaiten/Futa/Coyhaique transportation questions

fwiw, there was one subsidized bus a day from chaitén to futaleufú at noon. This was not on any website that I found. Transport was much more frequent this time around than the last time I was on the carretera, though I still ended up hitching to and from Esquel (argentina) from Futa, and there was ...

Chaiten/Futa/Coyhaique transportation questions

Hey forum people, long time dormant, but still know you guys to be a font of good info for all over Chile. I haven't been down to the Carretera Austral and environs in a long time, so I'm just checking in on a couple of things. I have googled, but have found (strangely) that people are better source...

Re: Memorial Tribute for Greg Lansen

I am just now reading this, and Vicky, I am so very sorry for your loss.

Thanks Admin, for making it sticky, I might have missed it otherwise, like you said.

Re: Mexican food anyone?

There are actually 2 in Barrio Brasil, one called Plaza Garibaldi the other one which is Charro de Oro. I believe Plaza Garibaldi is older, as I remember it being there ten years ago. There is another little "taco" place around there that I can't remember the name of, but was no great shakes, same s...

Re: Travel tips south of Santiago

From Talca, you can also take the ramal, one of Chile's only remaining small gauge railways. It's pretty fun, if very slow. Old train, a few stops, lots of photo ops, etc. It takes about 4 hours, and you get to Constitución, which has some lovely beaches, but was also the site of the greatest human ...

Re: Leaving Chile

I am not aware of the lump sum vs. smaller amounts. I think the payout is just what you're owed, but I guess I was owed too much to get it paid out as a lump sum. I would have taken it in as few payments as possible. I only worked where I'd been working for a few years, and didn't make much money, s...

Re: Leaving Chile

Seguro de cesantía I have done (though I am still in Chile, I left one job, and cashed that one out). Bring your signed and notarized finiquito (finalizing document that closes your contract) to the Seguro de Cesantia desk at any AFP. Bring your carnet and the finiquito. They will issue you a piece ...

Great. Now go fix registro civíl please. 4 hours 20 mins in line, and my carnet is still not ready a week after it was supposed to be.

Re: How Things REALLY Work in Chile

The baker's dozen analogy is very apt, and I'm not sure it always has to do with time. Just the other day, I was buying laundry detergent, and they were 2x different prices, depending on the format/size of the box. It comes in 3kilo, 4 kilo and 5 kilo boxes. The 5 kilo boxes were actually slightly m...

Re: LAN to cease ( forced ) operation in Argentina

I also have an upcoming problem, a connecting flight from Santiago to BA to Comodoro Rivadavia. I wonder if that now means the BA to CR will be from Ezeiza? Would be more pleasant than the midnight hour-long transfer to looks-like-a-bus-station Newberry/Aeroparque. The flight's Sept 4th. Will keep y...

Re: Imported Cheese Store?

gringalais, I think I recall seeing it at one of the Asian shops in Patronato for a brick of ten packs together for an even cheaper price. But I can't imagine what I'd do with all that cream cheese at once! 2600 for two is a great price. Is the shop where you get it a secret? Can you share?
