Re: Climate changing in Chile

People rarely seem to acknowledge overpopulation as one of the main roots of this problem (along with other things like waste). People have evolved to eat meat etc., but we don't need to grow to 10 billion of them making living standards miserable for everybody... (PS. That's my 2c; might not be aro...

Re: Homebrewers

I used to brew a bit before we had the kids. Got reasonably good at partial grain, producing some nice IPAs etc. Might get around to it again at some point, but there is a constant deluge of things to do & worry about...

It's also true that we have a relatively decent local brewery now.

Re: corredors and boilerplate leases

The corredora works more for the landlord, but it's not completely one-sided. Prospective tenants (who can go elsewhere) come through and ask them to find a suitable property (sometimes via contacts) and their initial fee is nominally split 50/50 in my experience, so both parties are their customers...

Re: Investing in International Stock Markets from Chile

It seemed like Internaxx had started accepting applications from Chilean residents again, last time I looked into it.

Re: The Chile Eclipses Thread

Yes, the best odds of seeing it would probably be a fast boat with an extra can of diesel (or whatever you put in them). Otherwise it's 50/50, as Britkid says. I don't think the "bring your car an be prepared to drive around" thing is at all realistic. Not only do you need a line of sight almost to ...

Re: Snacking in supermarkets.

Anyway, the whole eating produce whilst shopping happens all the time in the U.K. and like you say sometimes people maybe pay, sometimes they probably do not. I thought this happened everywhere in the world to be honest!! Huh, I don't remember seeing that when I lived there! Things change though. I...

Re: Snacking in supermarkets.

Yes, it was a bit of an eye opener to see people walking around blatantly munching "free stuff" like bread when we first arrived. We've let the children open their drinks now and then though, to shut them up, and no-one bats an eyelid when putting the empty boxes through the checkout... The crisps t...

Re: Investing in International Stock Markets from Chile

Yeah, I've read somewhere that the US doesn't have accumulating funds for some reason. However, I think if the fund itself accumulates dividends, that's factored into the NAV (which tracks some total return index), rather than the share holding. Otherwise, your broker might reinvest distributions in...

Re: Investing in International Stock Markets from Chile

Can't you find something similar trading on a European exchange? Eg. the Internaxx ETF selector gives 45 hits for category "Global emerging markets bond" (including funds denominated in USD if that's convenient)...

Re: Santiago peaje

Great, thanks. There seem to be various different operators and I wasn't sure which might apply, but if I can just get this pass for all of them (and leave the truck parked on the middle day), that's probably the most practical thing. (Now I just have to figure out how to enter diplomatic plates...)

Santiago peaje

I'm planning to drive to Santiago next weekend, which is something I almost never do (first time with the kids, besides airport stops). How do I figure out which of the roads that I'm likely to drive on are restricted and how to pay for them? I mainly want to get near Ñuñoa from the Ruta 5 Norte and...

Re: Investing in International Stock Markets from Chile

someone that is classifed as a none resident alien for u.s. tax purposes, buys a u.s. listed etf, that invest in none-u.s. stocks or bonds, that pay a diveden, is there still the 30% tax withholding on the divedens (assuming no tax treaty for simplicity)? Sorry, missed this earlier. I don't claim t...
