Re: If you have a caretaker, GET THEM UNDER CONTRACT!!!!

Just along the street from me a, Bolivian woman worked in a clandestine Residencial in return for board. No contract, no wages. That lasted a year until she fell out with the landlady, who tried to forcibly evict her. The upshot of that was a visit to the Inspección de Trabajo , who threw the book a...

Re: Climate changing in Chile

China's carbon emissions per capita are actually on a par with the somewhat economically neoliberal UK, both being 7-8 tonnes of CO2 per year, despite the UK's greater per capita wealth. The world's biggest manufacturer (with 20 times the population) Vs post-industrial UK? The two countries are not...

Re: Climate changing in Chile

SUVs and crossovers made up more than one in three cars sold globally last year—almost tripling their share from just a decade ago. The world increasingly wants these larger vehicles that originated in America. Spurred by rising incomes and lower gas prices, drivers in China , Australia, and other ...

Re: If you have a caretaker, GET THEM UNDER CONTRACT!!!!

GET THEM UNDER A WORK CONTRACT WITH CLEAR EMPLOYMENT TERMS, AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE PAYING ALL THE REQUIRED TAXES, ETC. The government and labour courts are not going to care about what a good relationship you had with them or how many times you shook hands, if the worker brings a claim. A clear work...

Re: Climate changing in Chile

Nobody knows.... AGW skeptics often claim that present-day sea level rise and glacier ice loss are a result of a natural recovery from the LIA. AGW believers counter that a “recovery from the LIA” is not an acceptable explanation; a causative mechanism must be identified. But they too are unable to ...

A propósito de Santería in Venezuela, here's a BBC report:
At Caracas' largest cemetery, Cementerio del Sur, most of the graves have been looted, for jewellery, gold teeth, or even bones, which can be sold for use in rituals.

Interesting and useful discussion. There are also the effects of the legal (not literal) "ambulance chasers" to consider: . Re: Venezuela crisis

My point is that this is no ignorant Campesino , this is an Appeals Court judge. A privileged member of the Chilean legal establishment who ought to behave in a rational, decent way. Keeping a photo of a rival stuck with pins, and demonic images is neither rational nor, for want of a better phrase, ...

Re: Venezuela crisis

Never mind magical realism, there is a lot of real Black Magic, brujería , practised here. Maduro is a devotee of Santería , as was Hugo Chávez. Its a form of witchcraft originally brought to Cuba by African slaves. And just this week, and closer to home, the PDI turned over the office of Emiliano E...

Re: The Pinera administration 2.0

A right-wing government that goes for rehabilitation instead of demonizing offenders as irredeemable? That's why I like Chilean political culture despite all its flaws. Ever heard of buenismo ? Its the way governments these days try to present themselves as caring and concerned via the largely uncr...

The latest abomination is supermarket bread, which is trucked in frozen. The instore "bakeries" just stick it in the ovens, and generally pull it out undercooked, so the result is dense and soggy. Of course, as bread is sold by weight, the stores make more money the higher the water content, as well...
