Re: Internet Connection

Movistar unilaterally migrated us to FO from ADSL last year, going from an 8/1 Mbps connection to 500/250 Mbps for much the same price. The POT line associated with the old service became a virtual one through the FO router, which probably precludes a Bridge connection as they have to reserve ports...

Re: Internet Connection

2020 broadband update TLDR: keep an eye on rollouts in your area, the market is shaking up as VTR is crashing down. On the negative side, VTR really shat the bed for the past year with massive unreliability. I've been a customer of them for 13 years and am now eager to get rid of them. On the positi...

No. Chile is shitting its bed right now, it's not even worth considering.

Re: Internet Connection

For those of you with VTR, make sure to call them to get them to upgrade your plan to the new tiers. 400/10 just became 600/16 but they don't perform these upgrades automatically:

Re: Internet speeds in Valpo

When they install the modem you can ask the techie to set it in bridge mode so that it's just a dumb modem, then put your own router behind it where you can admin your own DNS, QoS, Wifi, etc. Also a tip for long-term VTR subscribers: make sure to keep up with their plans and call them to get your s...

PC monitor repair in Viña or Santiago

The 27" IPS monitor I imported from South Korea a few years ago stopped working, but I'm pretty sure it can be fixed (probably a damaged capacitor or disconnected internal cable). I called several stores in Viña that don't do repairs, because that would require what is most rare in Chile, namely ski...

Re: Jumbo supermarkets.

There is a good selection of food products in Tottus markets...they are quite similar to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods markets in California. Stopped by the one in Reñaca yesterday and they had a nice selection of imported food items from Tesco. Comparing Tottus with Whole Foods is like saying you dr...

Re: Investing in International Stock Markets from Chile

Looking more into TD's LUX platform, their multi-currency + ETF support makes me think of combos to hedge against holding assets solely in CLP and USD. For instance right now our Chilean house is $150K cheaper in USD than it was a few years ago (well not really because of its appreciation in CLP ter...

Interesting and timely discussion. Did anyone actually open an account with TD Direct Investing yet?

It happens that this guy just posted a video about their online platform:

Re: So long, Chile.

Too bad ExpatBob had these issues and decided to leave. I couldn't function without reliable internet either, and I've often heard about similar tales of dismal service in Santiago Centro. Here in the Viña/Concon area, in almost 9 years VTR has served us well for the most part. We went through regul...

Buying a mobile phone abroad based on specs

My Moto E 2nd Gen works OK but becomes sluggish when I open too many apps - like say having Whatsapp, Google Maps and Plex running while we're in the car (don't worry, I'm not fiddling with the phone while driving!). I've just read about Wileyfox, a British phone company that seems to be successful ...
