Re: Let us write a constitution for Chile.

Here are some of the reasons I’ve heard for why people are voting “Apruebo”: - The powers that companies and individuals have to control natural resources. - The lack of a guarantee of quality education and healthcare. - Lack of implementation of regulations protect the environment. - Lack of regula...

Re: What I'm looking for in a retirement home in Chile (request for advice)

I live in Valdivia, Los Ríos Region. That could be an option. It’s around 12 hours in a bus south from Santiago. It’s got a population of around 100K and it’s about half an hour drive from the beach. There’s plenty of surrounding countryside and woodland (although I’m not particular familiar with th...

Re: Chilean Spanish? What do you think of it?

Chilean Spanish is often considered almost like a completely different language due to their use of various slang words and pronunciation. I’ve also heard it described as “the worst” of all the Spanishes. To speak and to listen to. I studied European Spanish at university and have a Chilean wife and...

Re: Minimum possible time in Chile to then wait for temporary periodic income visa in the US ?

That was in early March. Here we are more than six months after my in-person visit to formally start the application review process. According to the status-check page on the immigration website, nothing apparent has changed since that visit. It’s possible that you’re application has been approved....

Re: Let us write a constitution for Chile.

Two extremely tribal sides fighting against each other This is not the case in Chile because Apruebo is strongly supported in all parts of society and Rechazo tends to correlate with age. En resumen, quienes se inclinan por esta opción son, en promedio, hombres y mujeres de clase más bien acomodada...

Re: Let us write a constitution for Chile.

I have a feeling Rechazo might sneak a victory here. It reminds of the Brexit vote in the U.K. Two extremely tribal sides fighting against each other, with one side (e.g. Apruebo, or Remain) being much more vocal and active on social media than the other side (Rechazo or Leave). There will be a lot ...

Re: coronavirus (COVID-19) in Chile

Quarantine means absolutely f*** all to a lot of people here. A lot of them seem to just go about their business as usual. My sister-in-law was supposedly in quarantine in Santiago and she somehow ended up in Osorno visiting my in-laws (me and my wife went mental, as my mother-in-law has respiratory...

Re: The Chile Economy, Social Crisis and Virus Impact

I’ve been reading a lot more about this and speaking to Chileans. It seems to be more of a sticking plaster rather than a sustainable solution. A lot of the Chileans I’ve spoken to want to just take the money out of the AFP and put it in a savings account. We’ll see what happens. I don’t have an AFP...

Re: The Chile Economy, Social Crisis and Virus Impact

Could anyone who’s a bit more clued up about the AFP system and the Chilean economy give me some idea of the potential negative ramifications of the 10% reform being approved? Thanks.

My wife’s aunt, who was a child during the earthquake, has the image of the ground moving like waves burnt into her memory.
