Re: rising anti-immigration politics in the Chilean Election

Not so many immigrants in the south where I am yet. People's opinions are mainly driven by what they see on the news. From my own perspective, the immigrants from Venezuela seem to be entering Chile legally. So I think its great that they can escape a bad situation in their own country. Hats off to...

Re: rising anti-immigration politics in the Chilean Election

In Santiago Chileans in customer facing jobs have started to smile their tortured smiles and try to do small, customer friendly talk. It's so hard for them, poor souls. It's a big change that has caught them completely unprepared. It's like a whole class of people have found themselves completely u...

Re: rising anti-immigration politics in the Chilean Election

Its very interesting to watch the Chilean sentiment on immigration change. By virtue of being an ExPat over the past 3 years I have had many nationals launch into a diatribe about "the wall" and how awful the idea is. Some of these people I only met for the first time and I hadn't said anything abo...

Re: Chile Wealth, Inequality, and International rankings

Yup I'd say you summed it up. Strange but interesting. I'm not too familiar with the Guardian, I just regularly look for mentions of chile in news aggregator sites. Just when one thinks the Mapuche are getting used to the way things have been for a long time, a relative homeostasis of angst...a fre...

Re: Chile Wealth, Inequality, and International rankings

Interesting article with some new info about the mapuche and a recent complaint made to the ICC against Chile and Argentina https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2019/apr/12/indigenous-mapuche-accuse-chile-brazil-genocide It's the guardian 🙄 , I'm surprised they didn't mention Pinochet in there somewhe...

Re: If you have a caretaker, GET THEM UNDER CONTRACT!!!!

well that is exactly my point. gringos try to keep it simple, untill they find out just how complicated it is. hey, don't get me wrong. there are plenty of crappy employers out there that are the cause of these crazy labour laws. in fact, rather amazing they are not more strict considering how bad ...

Re: If you have a caretaker, GET THEM UNDER CONTRACT!!!!

I seriously doubt those needing caretakers for their home or property will draw a "contract of employment" knowingly how involved all this can get. Not good for the "employer or employee". At least in the south, that´s not the way things are done. People don´t even want to register their homes to a...

Re: Chile Wealth, Inequality, and International rankings

chile, for better or worse, effectively is a dollarized economy, with the peso perhaps more pegged to the dollar than the chinese RMB. you can not say walk in to a store and spend dollars (in most places), but the vast majority of the economy is backed by dollars. all those exports and a lot of imp...

Re: Chile Wealth, Inequality, and International rankings

Growth projections (for what it's worth, they will probably all change again mid year) still it's a hell of a lot better than 1.7% a couple years ago. Copper price is pretty good at the moment, so I guess that helps. I did read something somewhere thr other day saying that Chile was not keeping up w...

Re: If you have a caretaker, GET THEM UNDER CONTRACT!!!!

As a follow up, after the contract you need to have the documents required by IST on file signed by the employee. This is a loooonnnngggg document that specifies everything they do and how they are supposed to do it. W/O = exactly what admin indicated: the employee's word is what counts. Case: Care...

Re: Fresh grown food

I've seen only one variety of squash (calabaza) in the supermarkets and fruterias, and it is just so-so. How about acorn squash, butternut squash, buttercup squash, spaghetti squash, and best of all red kuri squash? Do seed vendors have much selection beyond what you see in the grocery store? I've ...
