Re: Health Insurance -

Atlanta - I dropped my US coverage - which was expensive, hard to use and had high deductibles, and got coverage here from BanMedica which is associated with Clinica Santa Maria. The cost was less than 15% of US (no dental but I have never in life had dental coverage) AND I had a pre-existing condit...

Re: Correos Chile is horrible!

to mem OK tell me, what are the unwritten rules???? It all seems very changeable. I used to receive packages every three of four weeks via Fedex with a declared value of less than $30. Mostly books. These packages would clear the aduana no problem. This year, EVERY package, regardless of value, has ...

Re: chile's migration crisis

"I have seen the same thing for forty years now. If I had to find a reason, I would say its a self-absorbed, win-at all-costs mentality. If you despise those you consider as "inferiors" and hate and envy your "superiors", it makes for a very frustrating existence. This happens everywhere of course, ...

Re: corredors and boilerplate leases

Bitter experience: the contracts which seem excessively harsh and biased to favor the landlord go with apartments or houses which have problems which the landlord is hoping to either: ignore, or get some sucker to fix. at a minimum, make sure that your contract specifies that the major systems of ho...

Re: Coyhaique Most Polluted City in the Americas

Air pollution from burning wet and/or trash wood is definitely one of my pet peeves - and YES the "rich" people are as ignorant/selfish/lazy as the poor. There seems to be a sector of chileno society which absolutely does not and will not think logically or show any respect for any one. This is not ...

to Gloria: Thanks for the chuckles. I mean it. To Parkside. Extranjeros.gob is very handy. A useful thing would be an international drivers license, which might help with the vexing problem of obtaining a chile driving license, if you get that far. You can get that easily in your home country and no...

Re: Bringing kitty to Chile from United States

It's been a few years, so there may be changes, but I brought my kitties here. The airline was Delta which allows one pet per person in a soft pack which goes under the seat. My kitties were in North Carolina. The state agriculture department had the forms which my vet filled in. My vet had the auth...

Re: Buying Gold/Silver Coins

The problem with buying/selling gold or silver coins in chile - in addition to IVA - is that's there's essentially no market. Most dealers will only buy
chilean pesos so coins from other countries are almost unsellable. For the desperate-to-sell, premiums can run 30-40% or more.

Re: Dentist

Try Dr. Castro at clinica versalles - the office in el Golf. Versalles 3036. 22337223. Competent dentist and a very nice man. He did a truly painless root canal for me. Not cheap, but no dentist is cheap. You may be able to "negotiate" a bit.

Re: Chile: second run

Hmmmmm. Well. Another question to you 41southchile: How are you having your books shipped? I've been using Fedex economy - going to Santiago. As I said, for years that was no problem. It has only been the last 3 months or so that it has been really horrible. I wonder if Fedex is part of the problem....

Re: Chile: second run

to 41southchile - how are you getting by without paying duty??? I have been buying second hand books for years for just a few bucks and having them shipped here. Used to be that less than $30 paid no duty - but this year I've been getting dinged by customs every time. For example, on a $6 book I pai...

Re: Guide to validating education for a driving license

Spacecat gives a really complete accurate description of the process as I encountered it. Yes, I did study for a couple months - the maths are different from what I was taught, but in the end, the most complicated part was getting signed up for the exam. Regarding the history of chile - it seems to ...
