Re: The Chile Economy, Social Crisis and Virus Impact

Yah, kinda expected because the Chilean political scene is super moderate. The "fringe" they describe is probably PC which is as "extreme" as your average European socdem party (see Jadue). Also there's no Bernie, let alone Chavez — even the most popular politicians are boring and uninspiring.

Re: The Chile Economy, Social Crisis and Virus Impact

Almost all conspiracies of this kind come from ignoring or not understanding classes and their collective interests. This idea is not specifically socialist or Marxist — even Adam Smith divided the society like that (and Marx built upon lots of his ideas later). Conspiracies tend to arise in the whi...

Re: The Big Patagonia Resettlement Idea

By this logic, Alaska is hardly the US, and Kamchatka is hardly Russia, and Tibet is hardly… Whoops, better watch my mouth! 👀

I'm all for self-determination but gonna grab some popcorn when the Chilean government notices gringo-fueled separatism in the Zona Austral.

Re: The Big Patagonia Resettlement Idea

Another cynical response. You want a piece of Chile for yourself but don't want anyone else there to turn it into a mess. But the truth is, modern living is a mess. Patagonia is going to be an international place with many collaborations with Chileans. It's the 21st century, plenty of sustainable b...

Re: The Chile Economy, Social Crisis and Virus Impact

They didn't crack down on criminals! They were the criminals. It's ridiculous that we are still having this debate. Second that, how is it not a crime when a state does it instead? If anything, the crimes done by the military were much worse than typical robberies. Pinochet apologists use the argum...

Re: International shipping unreliable

I just received a big package from Amazon via DHL. It should be over 8kg and have over 20 books, but I found it almost empty, with only 6 books inside — all damaged because of wobbling alone in a huge box without the standard airbags. There was an additional Argentinian(!) book in Spanish that I did...

Re: Car insurance first time in chile

I moved from Mapfre to Sura because they have " Seguro x KM " which is super handy during the pandemic. The upside: fully online, quick, super cheap if you don't drive much. The downside: they log your trips and driving speed with a GPS device. But Mapfre was good and paid without any questions two ...

Re: coronavirus (COVID-19) in Chile

lets say a company with a reputation for good vaccines, produced a 50% efficiency vaccine. I went to check the info scrambled around r/Covid19 and found that Sinovac has: • 100% efficacy against severe cases (doubtful but whatever) • 78% efficacy against an infection with symptoms (initial value re...

Re: Libertarians Thoughts on Chile Now?

Not only to Chileans, the American Hobbesian concept of " negative liberty " is completely alien to most people in the world. There are also no organic libertarian movements in other countries – it's all recent copy-paste from the US, fueled by translated propaganda created by the University of Chic...

well someone finally pointed out an obvious problem with their quartine to everyone that does not live in a city: two hours is not enough time to do anything. https://www.biobiochile.cl/noticias/nacional/region-de-los-rios/2021/01/15/diputado-de-los-rios-pide-revisar-tiempos-de-permisos-2-horas-no-...

Re: How to become fluent in Spanish

Music and podcasts in Spanish do wonders because it's acquisition "in background". I like the podcast Entiende Tu Mente a lot: it's a bit advanced and the hosts are Spaniards, but the topics are interesting enough to not phase out. There're lots of other podcasts available for free on Spotify.
