Re: electric vehicles in chile

Colectivos on average contain 3 people or 4 including the driver. Whereas cars contain an average of about 1.5 people I think. Maybe 2 in Chile. Colectivos are also small cars that don't take up parking spaces during the day, whereas individual's cars are often SUVs and so on that emit more and fill...

Re: electric vehicles in chile

Very glad to have visited Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, Machu Pichu, Cusco, Rapa Nui before the roped off and restricted areas and access were put on. I went to Machu Pichu in 2004. We got the first bus from the village up there. It left at 6am. We arrived at 5.55am and walked on the bus. Because we were on...

Re: electric vehicles in chile

As I mentioned before on another thread, Toyota has said 2030 is a more realistic time frame for solid state batteries. We can't wait that long to solve the current global warming situation.

Re: Chile's Place in Latin America

The question is always posed as should they have used the nukes or not but to me there might have been a third way which would have been to use the nukes on the Japanese mainland but not on a city, and then threaten to use them on a city if the Japanese didn't surrender. Ideal would have been to use...

Re: electric vehicles in chile

Electric cars are still urban toys imho and would be impractical in the North of Chile, at least. Right now they couldn't even get halfway from Santiago to La Serena (470 km) without needing at least one recharge. And you can bet that those obligatory "fast charges" along the way will cost a lot mo...

Re: electric vehicles in chile

OK, perhaps I was wrong about Tesla making its own batteries. I am not sure. It does own its own battery making facility in the US but I didn't realize Panasonic was investing in it or partnering in it. But the point is that Panasonic owns all the intellectual property?

Re: electric vehicles in chile

On the liquid natural gas vehicles, it does look like they are less polluting than a petrol or diesel car, and quite possibly less polluting than an electric car. However, from a global warming standpoint, I think it's likely that an electric car would be better in most countries including the UK, U...

Re: electric vehicles in chile

Coal and Pollution Come on Bert Douglas you said “coal” was “most” not fossil fuels. Now you are changing what you said. I still think pollution impact of electric cars is not minimal. The point is that an electric cars replaces a petrol or diesel one, so I don’t see how the cleanliness of natural ...

Re: electric vehicles in chile

Some good points admin. On the reliability/parts question, keep in mind that, as the Forbes article I posted says: "electric motors only have one moving part while engines in traditional automobiles contain dozens. Items that do not need to be replaced in electric vehicles include oil, fan belts, ai...

Re: electric vehicles in chile

If I hadn't have travelled on those flights, they wouldn't have had to lift my weight or the weight of my luggage and so the fuel burned would have been less. Also, flights will match the demand. If I hadn't taken those flights, I would have increased the chance that they would have cancelled or red...

Re: electric vehicles in chile

I don't agree that the pollution impact of electric cars is minimal as you say. It is not true that "most" electricity is made from coal. I suspect pollution from electric cars is less, because diesel and petrol are purely dirty fuels, whereas a portion of the electricity at least is from cleaner fu...

Re: electric vehicles in chile

shipps and planes are another one i am waiting for. Long haul planes that don't cause global warming just isn't going to happen for a very, very long time as covered in George Monbiot's book Heat and other sources. Clean planes are just not even at the R and D stage. Last year I flew to New York, f...
