Re: America on Fire

I see some similarities with Chile. One is that both are countries with a lot of inequality and perhaps you might argue an excess of "free market" or "neoliberal" capitalism that has had its day and is no longer a good choice. At some point in the coming months or years, there may be protests of a s...

Re: coronavirus (COVID-19) in Chile

So on April 29th and all days before then Chile reported 500 or less new cases per day. Starting from April 30th onwards it became 1000+ per day, suddenly jumped up. I can't find out what the lag time would be from a reported, detected case (presumably the test occuring on average several days afte...

Re: Building house in Chile the "gringo" way

So just flicking through the whole thread....thanks for sharing... The flat roof, you mentioned you know how to design, the solution is you just design it in such a way that after heavy rains you can just leave the water there until it dries out and given the construction quality it will be fine? An...

Re: coronavirus (COVID-19) in Chile

Earlier this month, I found an official government website where you could review all the cases by comuna everywhere in the country. Now I can only find major regions, major cities or Santiago data. I want all the breakdown for every comuna everywhere in the country (not Santiago), can anyone rememb...

Re: coronavirus (COVID-19) in Chile

Sure Al Jazeera has a bias, but so does CNN and the BBC and the Guardian in its reporting of Chile and other countries, are you going to ban all of those? And, if you ban all the left wing sources, do you also ban all the right wing sources. Then, who's left? If you are banning someone for reporting...

Re: Any push back?

Thanks for the info ya'll. It's bizarre. When I was in Chile in January there were men in masks burning tires in the streets. On two separate occasions they tried to stop my truck Reginald Denny style. Can you provide some more detail on this? Were they stopping your truck simply by blocking the ro...

Re: Any push back?

These types are protests in the West are from groups that are right and far-right people with anti-mainstream, anti-science views, conspiracy theorists, and associated nutjobs (not all of them, but some). Chile doesn't have that sub-culture and so won't have these types of protests. That being said,...

Re: coronavirus (COVID-19) in Chile

Here is a chart that shows.....overall effective deaths. Meaning...a lot of people are driving less so there are less people getting in fatal car accidents. People aren't skydiving as much with bogus parachutes. Gangs arent rumbling in the streets, as much, and so less gang deaths..., etc, etc This...

Re: coronavirus (COVID-19) in Chile

I just googled it and the all-cause death rate in Chile (i.e. total number of people dying of anything even old age) is 300 per day. At the moment there are 5-20 people dying per day in Chile of coronavirus (reported deaths). I think that is too small to be able to answer the question about whether ...

Re: coronavirus (COVID-19) in Chile

I've been out three times now in the last few weeks, one in Santiago (edge of Providencia near Nunoa), one in Isla de Maipo and one in Talagante. (Plus a few jogs or cycle rides near the house). It seems to me that this is going to go on for too long to be able to realistically only go out for medic...
