Re: electric vehicles in chile

Prius increases pollution? Compared to what? Walking or cycling or taking the bus or the train maybe. But not compared to any other petrol or diesel car. Not a debate you can win. The mining and refining of that nickel released more greenhouse gasses than a Hummer built and operated for 150,000 km....

Re: electric vehicles in chile

But wait! Technology to the rescue. We''ll save the planet yet. Here's the answer. A big extra battery pack to drag around. These are very rare, will remain very rare, and may even be obsolete entirely by about 2030. I've never once seen one in the wild. Have you? Very niche product. Not relevant t...

Re: Climate changing in Chile

The population debate is related to a land use debate I saw an interesting video recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL1rpFCBg5s&t=0s Watch from 2.45 to 3.30 Half of the land area of the planet is used for growing food and grazing animals. If we all went vegetarian and mostly vegan, I think it...

Re: Climate changing in Chile

I agree that over population is an issue and it should be talked about more. Is it though? I'm going to look into that some more, but reports I've been reading recently are that population projections that are only a couple of years old are being completly revised and lowered as birth rates in many...

Re: Climate changing in Chile

I think over consumption is part of the problem, yes. I try to buy only what I really need or really want and am fairly minimalist. I think that is the right way forward, instead of working hard and stressing out so you can have the biggest house, the shiniest car, fashionable clothes, the top smart...

Re: Climate changing in Chile

Just because something bad has happened in the past or will again in the future doesn't make it OK to let it happen now if we can stop it. It's not a good argument. The deniers are in serious retreat. Scientific evidence clearly shows that fossil fuels/climate change etc is already killing millions ...

Re: APEC 2019, Putin and Xi coming to dinner

At least in Chile you will be able to protest again Xi or Putin without a high risk of being thrown in jail...as far as I know. As far as I am concerned, both of them are total villains if you look what is happening in their countries. There is also the COP 25 UN climate change conference in Chile i...

Re: 723 chilean pesos to the dollar

Copper price declined a bit in the last day and week, so peso weakened.

Copper price at its lowest for 2-3 years today, pesos at its weakest for 2-3 years today.

Same story as usual...

Re: electric vehicles in chile

I've seen them quite often. They are not a rarity at all. If every one of the modern red ones is an electric one, then there must be quite a lot of them already, above and beyond the initial announcements of a few routes.

Re: Street Theatre

Certainly don't condone this violence but remember the media will focus on the violent aspect, even if it's only 0.1% of the protesters. I was driving through Santiago a few weeks ago, on the part of the Alameda that connects Providencia with centro, around there, and passed one of these student prot...
