Re: coronavirus (COVID-19) in Chile

If anyone is depressed about COVID or 2020 in general, I thought I would write a little article about how climate change, usually a depressing topic, actually had some positive news in 2020 for once! Several things.... See below if interested: Maybe we might just be about to reach some tipping point...

Re: How to become fluent in Spanish

To start with I travelled around South America for 3.5 months while reading a book "Learn Spanish in 3 months." I really made progress to an advanced level when I lived in Spain for a year and a half with a full immersion. That´s when I went from basic to advanced. I did teach English and hang out w...

690s is actually lower (stronger peso) than it was when the "estallido social" started.
looks like you are right, just looking on xe.com now, looks like it was about 710-720 when the social crisis started (exact number depending on exactly which day and time you mark as the start)

Re: Copper up, USD down.

It's pretty likely that the better handling of the pandemic in Asia has helped China/Asia get a bit ahead of the west...or catch up faster if you like... An interesting question here is if China grows stronger and the US/the West weaker does this benefit Chile? In a sense of human rights and democra...

Re: Copper up, USD down.

If I look on NASDAQ, I can see specific increases in copper price Jan 4th and 5th and specific strengthening in the peso vs the dollar Jan 4 and 5th. And if you pull up graphs of the Chilean peso vs the UK pound, euro, yen you see similar graph - i.e. it was the Chilean peso that strengthened on Jan...

Re: Foreign credit cards no longer work?

On a sidenote; even before the masks, chilean cashiers had problems hearing whether a foreigner says credito or debito. With a mask on, that is now even worse... Yeah everyone understood nearly everything I said before COVID, with the masks not so good. Totally same experience. I end up more of les...

Re: Foreign credit cards no longer work?

Found something interesting. So, these are Transbank machines. Not webpay. In all the years I have been in Chile, never once has a foreign debit/credit card worked as "debito" for me, only as "credito" Until now. Credito no longer works as an option, but Debito does. How they worked this, who knows...

Re: Setting up a (non-RUT) bank account

my best bet is going to be to do the rounds of all the banks and hope that I catch someone on a good day who sympathises with me. hmm this might not work - how long have you got between landing in Chile and needing to have a bank account actually opened? Also, will you already have permanent reside...

Re: Setting up a (non-RUT) bank account

As for driving, thats up to you, it will only be an insurance issue should you have an accident, cops don't generally care if a foreigner (European looking foreigner) doesn't have a Chilean license and will let you off if you show a valid other countries drivers license. I think this is about right...

Re: Setting up a (non-RUT) bank account

Isn't 3 million the Cuenta RUT's limit for how much you can have in at any one time. Is the limit to receive a single transaction lower? I was unable to send over 1 million once. Perhaps the answer is on this forum or their website. I suggest you ask them to pay you cash or to a UK account. Otherwis...

Re: Total Solar Eclipse December 14th Pucon and Villarica Area

Was very interesting in that to me they appeared as a single "star" they were so close! Were others able to see them as two separate planets with the naked eye? Only with binoculars was I able to seem them as two planets. Quite unusual since a conjunction usually just means two planets are fairly cl...

Re: 6500 USD net a month

Was in La Colina area a while back maybe last month somewhere around the Ruta 57 not sure exactly where and had that experience of suddenly going from a clearly poor area to a clearly rich area in about 10 seconds. Quillicura was somewhere behind me and was coming in to probably Chicureo or Colina m...
