Re: Chile Wealth, Inequality, and International rankings

I was once walking through some central areas of San Francisco at 1am after finishing late at a restaurant and there are for sure a lot of interesting characters about. It reminded me very much of Gotham City at night. On another trip there I once saw a drunk in the middle of the day drinking from a...

Re: Chile Wealth, Inequality, and International rankings

I suspect some of us (I include the admin and myself) have more in common in our lifestyles with Bezos or Bill Gates or Zuckerberg than with the poorest people in the earth. In strict financial terms that isn't so, but in terms of quality of life it probably is. At least we can cross borders when we...

Re: Electric Cars in Chile

If you're going to use solar panels to charge your electric car, it will nearly always need to be done overnight. Most of the energy going into a solar panel where I live in Chile would probably be between 11am and 5pm when for most residential properties it's not needed as there are less people in ...

Re: Electric Cars in Chile

Brit.......how do my home solar panels charge my car that is 20 km away at my place of work? Very easily. They wait for you to drive 20km to home! If you had solar panels at your house and an electric car, you would be charging overnight at home each day and you would have a full capacity and you w...

Re: Electric Cars in Chile

Solar panels is an individual choice for people that are very concerned about the environment, or like the off grid independence. It's also for someone with savings available now. While you will save money and in theory make the money back, this is going to take 5 or 10 or 20 years. Most people don'...

Re: Electric Cars in Chile

Solar panels can charge a car that's away all day as long as its daily mileage is 100km or less or whatever the range of the car is. Solar panels for most people would provide most of the juice a car needs. Only obvious exception is if you do very heavy mileage on a daily basis. One of the good thin...

But you can get Priuses for under 10mil all day long and they pull 50mpg+ After that the Lexus CT200h...pulls almost 40mpg, but I really don't appreciate the styling of the ct200h. There are Lexus IS and GS and RX hybrids but the RX's have this bad vehicle acceleration control problem where they su...

Re: Electric Cars in Chile

Hybrid Ambadassador, in interview Shinzuo Abe, Toyota’s powertrain general manager said they "want to make solid-state batteries available in the early part of the 2020s decade. But in fact, that won’t be on a mass-production basis. We will begin with small-lot and trial production. We would never e...

Re: Electric Cars in Chile

Doesn't work like that. A coal-fired generating plant isn't a light bulb, you can't just switch it on and off as needed. ...... You seem to assume that a national electricity grid could run on 100% renewables. This has never been achieved anywhere in the world. The Telegraph is an establishment-defe...

Re: Electric Cars in Chile

Another question I have also wondered is, how long do those batteries last in electric cars, and I imagine they are expensive to replace, so what happens when your electric car is say 5 years old ? , there is virtually no resale value as the battery is shot, (just like cell phones have a tendency t...

Re: Electric Cars in Chile

The issue with battery electric cars for personal transportation is that not only grid-related problems have never been resolved anywhere yet, but they're also extremely dangerous when fully charged (they explode into an extremely high temperature fireball and so fast you have no chance of getting ...
