another Pakistani arrested, and new immigration procedures

Postby admin » Thu Apr 14, 2011 6:07 pm

For those that have not been following, there is another case of Pakistani being arrested in Chile. This one was caught with a fake visa, but also set off INTERPOL warrant flags as a possible wanted terrorist by India. Pakistan is of course denying it is the same person.

I have been saying for sometime that Chile has a Pakistan problem in relation to illegal immigration and illegal activities, simply based on the number of contacts we receive regularly from Pakistani nationals seeking assistance with illegal immigration to Chile or through Chile. There has also been some cases involving Peru and so on recently. Well, immigration and Chilean INTERPOL (a.k.a. PDI) are also aware of this, and have changed procedures accordingly.

We were informed directly by INTERPOL and immigration recently, that there is a new internal procedure to run INTERPOL checks on all immigration application to Chile including in the country of origin or countries the applicant has connections with for any warrants before granting a visa. This is in addition the required registeration with PDI after it is granted.

For most people this means nothing, because it happens internally. It may however result in delays of application approval, as you have checks against foreign databases and in a few cases it may need to be run several times as your application is being processed as there is an expiration date on the report that immigration can use.

This is one of the reasons I have been very, very admit that all foreigners, no matter what country you come from, follow exactly the procedures and laws of immigration (and all the other laws for that matter). It only takes a few idiots, playing fast and loose with the system for it to effect all foreigners in the country. I am here not just thinking of possible terrorist with fake visas, but also just the run of the mill English teacher working under the table because they do not want to pay taxes or are trying to game the labor law system against their employer.

If you are looking to engage in illegal activity of any sort don't come to Chile and definitely do not call us.

Well, seems this Pakistani in custody is not the terrorist that India was looking for. Still, got a Pakistani arrested on a fake visa in Chile, and sooner or later that is going to translate in to more hassles for everyone trying to immigrate to Chile.

I think about 32 were arrested here in Iquique last year, later 10 of them charged. It seemed to develop that they had valid visas for entry to chile, but doctored them later, and came here under the pretense that their contacts here would then get them visas for canada and/or the US, supposedly easier for them to do from Chile.

I don't know all the details, but it seems like there are plenty of scams out there - not exactly sure if any of them were innocent parties or not, really. Charles is right, all it will end up doing is make it more difficult to enter chile even as a tourist from specific regions of the world.
