They sell a similar thing in Jumbo here called Bolaseca. Ahem. In Lima damp was a huge problem and shoes were especially susceptible. They often turned green with mould. You could buy long electric bars to place in the bottom of closets. I have often wondered why someone did not import them to Chile. ... uminio-_JM

Storing spices and seeds in the freezer will prevent the growth of mold, but the article mentions that the toxin was already present in the store-bought merken. The mold produced the toxin before it got to the store.

I think that first the original post needs a correction:

It is not any specific mold that is the concern of the article, it actually refers to a toxin, a mycotoxin, produced by certain molds: ochratoxin A (OTA).

In surveys, [ochratoxin A (OTA] has been found in a very wide range of raw and processed food commodities all over the world. It was first reported in cereals, but has since been found in other products, including coffee, dried fruits, wine, beer, cocoa, nuts, beans, peas, bread and rice. It has also been detected in meat, especially pork and poultry, following transfer from contaminated feed.

It seems that bacteria are also a serious problem in spices:

Spices are natural products that, without antimicrobial treatment, can harbour large numbers of bacteria, including Salmonella and pathogenic E. coli. Moreover, spices are often added to foods that will not undergo further processing and will be consumed as ready-to-eat products. ... p=0#s22c10
