In Arica it's not a hassle without a car, I wouldn't want one at this point anyway. Maybe later. Plenty of taxi's here, almost too many taxi's and collectivos in this town. 1200 peso's will get you pretty much anywhere in Arica in a taxi, sometimes it may be a little more if it's sort of out of the way. Collectivos are less. Plenty of buses too. The buses lowered thier fare recently down to 200 pesos. I don't mind taking the bus in Arica but certain times of day they can get very crowded.

I don't remember how much the buses were in Valpo/Vina, 350 pesos? In Vina the bus rides are a bit longer time wise since it's a larger area but you can get most anywhere around town or suburb areas in 20 or 25 minutes.

car rentals

Postby admin on Fri Dec 07, 2007 12:58 am

Car rentals are an option for those that really need a car just for a short special trip. small compacts and up start at around 40,000 CPL. Often it is cheaper and faster to drop in to a city by plane or bus, then to drive anyway considering gas toll roads, and such.

Just for kicks, I just went out and gathered all the toll receipts I had from Santiago to Isla Chiloe. Now I may have lost a few, but a total of 13 toll receipts came to 17,400 CLP. Gas - oh, don't even ask me about that. We tried to alway top off the gas tank (an old Army habit) whenever we reached a bit below half a tank. I'm guessing we spent almost $300 in gas. Of course we were doing the Jed Clampet Family thing with a full load of all our earthly belongings in the bed of the truck. A small rental car, like a VW Gol would definately bring down the gas consumption. The experience however, was PRICELESS.

VAlparaiso to Vina is around $410,00 one way.
Colectivos around Valpo are $240 or 250, from the cerros to el plan.

At night time $400.

I took one colectivo from Valpo to Placilla (around 10 t0 12 Km ) for $500.

Buses around the same price in Valparaiso.

Ascensores (lifts $ 250,00)

Plenty of transportation, around Valparaiso, besides driving a car around here, on the hills, requires a little of daredevil skills.

Maybe in the future, a car will help...but for now the thrill of driving downhill in a Sentra at 50 or 60 miles per hour, with 3 more passengers with you, turning blind corners, facing trucks or other cars as incoming traffic, swerving at the barking dogs, all these for $240 is ...Priceless
Between the right and the wrong path,I choose the machete...

cca 30 percent more expensive than in uncle sam's, but can still be 10-15 less than in europe. if anybody would ever need this information.

and it is possible to buy good choice of quality bikes too.

and bike repairs? excellent. that is something it is hard to miss. not really sure but i guess i saw many spare parts too, but wasn't detailed.
