which internet providers use others' networks in Stgo?

Postby Andres » Fri Aug 17, 2012 6:51 pm

The accommodation gods have blessed us with a new place to live (in Nunoa) after a long search.
Internet and (secondarily) landline phone use will important for our income, so we intend to have (a minimum of) two internet and landline phone providers.
The apartment block where we will be moving permits two internet providers: VTR and GTD.

Questions:
1) Which Santiago internet providers have their own networks and which run piggyback on another? (I do not want to buy from two services which use the same network, so when one goes down they are both down.)
2) What are the best "roaming" internet service providers in regards to speed, reliability and price? That is an alternative backup network or third option.

(I will add this data to the "Internet in Chile" wiki article.)
"Blessed are they who have nothing to say and can not be persuaded to say it."
"Laziness is the mother of invention."
Caveat applicable to all I write: I might be wrong.

What a great idea! Was thinking about this but have yet to fully understand half of what I find in the search results. Wiki's efforts are appreciated by those who read them continually and repeatedly. (There is not one thing that I have searched for that I haven't found and yet even if I have a vague idea, someone has usually thought of it more fully and sure enough there is an answer of sort). I will never read the food section before bed again, am still craving hamburgers.

Looking forward to an answer for this as I am just starting to trade again, commodities, especially my coffee and without a hookup and backup there and planning out of country disaster recovery plans are a tad inaccurate....does admin or others have any words of advise after the earthquake and how long things took before they got up and going??? Tin cans and string...carrier pigeons, dash over the border if your close enough, alligator clips and a linesman handset.....

back to learning my spanish, at kids level,...really badly...:( Hope everyone has a nice Sunday over there)

It seems many in Santiago and other parts had power and Internet in hours to a day or so.

I was without power and therefore Internet for almost a week but others in my area (San Antonio which received the long distance direct hit of the northward directed energy from the fault in the ocean) had power and thus Internet by day three or so. Many commercial locations were offering free Internet and charging of your cell to those still without power. I can say my Movistar landline had a dial tone throughout this entire period (but not necessarily the ability to call outside the area) and I wonder if I could have had a connection with a UPS to power the ADSL modem.

Perhaps the old adage that the copper phone line is the last to go down and first to come back up after an emergency is true.

In regards to the first question,

VTR and Movistar are more or less separate so the question is over the following which I can derive from the logs on hits to a website:

Telmex
GTD Manquehue / Telefonica del Sur
Entel
Claro
