I use VTR triple pack also for years, this month my bill decreased a lot and, since I learned that any problem with DNS is solved simply disconnecting and reconnecting the network cable, my calls to support dissapeared, no more calls to the messy 6006009000

I connected the Touchstone cable modem to my wireless router Linksys WTR54G and give inteernet to my son and two neighbors letting my connection opened, no security related problems anyway, I am convinced than security has much more to do with good practices in routine tasks than sophisticated hacker-protections

Thanks for reporting.

Make sure your firewall in Mac OS X is activated and that you set the "Enable Stealth Mode" in the advanced options.

That sounds like a good solution. Much better than the SBG900 modem/router/wifi who's firmware (for all components) is controlled by VTR. Where did you get the Touchstone? Did you buy it from a third-party and call VTR with the MAC addr, to enable it on their network (which is the way it works in the US). Or, did they sell it to you? Or, are you renting it from them?

I don't know how VTR works in this regard. My wife's family isn't too into this very much. I'd like to get them onto a modem (even through they feel they have an investment in this neutered SBG900, it's almost owned because the contract is almost over. They don't realize they shouldn't want to own it.).

I see it much easier, it doesn't matter what kind of modem VTR gives you, provided it has no wireless, you just need to ask they give you any connection without wireless modem and you connect it to a good router and define your security settings at your will. If VTR insist with a wireless modem (which I doubt) it is not hard to disable the wifi enable and connect to your own router.

The MAC address issue is also easy to fix, just go to settings on your router and choose "clone MAC ADDRESS" option, usually you can do it with a single click, the router detect your MAC and clone. If this doesn´t work using the same option you can check the MAC of the network card in your computer (checking "network connections" and then "details" if my memory not fail) and write manually the MAC in "clone MAC Address" instead to choose click with the buttom.

More easy: you call support VTR asking they register the MAC of your router, usually they dont have any problem to do it so.

Ah, the Touchstone cable modem is part of the service delivered with Triple Pack, no wireless, supplied by VTR

Thanks. That's what I suspected. But, it's not what my wife's family says they were told. But, I imagine the conversation went like this:

Brother-in-Law: "I can't connect any router can I?"
VTR: "No."
Brother-in-Law: "Ok."

I have a Problem..I like to play Pc Games such as Counter-strike 1.6, Counter-strike:source, and Call of duty 4. Now, The problem is every time I try to Browse Servers to join I get Disconnected from the Internet Completely ;however, I once I minimized the game and wait for like a minute the internet comes back and everything works again. What I have to do is browse the game servers and Quickly join the first one that pops, the weird thing is that I'm able to join the servers but i have to be swift. Once I'm inside the server I can play fine and the internet does not disconnect, My ISP is Embarq(used to be call Sprint, now Sprint only provides cellular phone services) I have a Wireless router from NETGEAR, I'm thinking it might be the NAT????? but i can't figure it out someone please halp!

The best way to eliminate the router is to connect directly to the DSL modem. The downside is that the half life for an unprotected computer (or, at least Windows) on the internet is something like 20 minutes.

I think your best bet (for US support) is to go to dslreports [dot] com, look in their forums section, and find the Embarq group. You can get help from other Embaq users. Also look for the Netgear support forum there. You could find some help in that forum. Also, Netgear itself has its own user support group.

But, I think the fastest way to diagnose it is to eliminate the router (and, if you connect wirelesly, eliminate the wifi part of the router by wiring yourself directly into the router). I'd bypass wireless first. Then disable the firewall and try it again. (You still have NAT. So, I *think* there's at least some protection). Then try a different brand of router. Then, connect directly to the modem. Perhaps using software firewall to minimize the risk. (Google for "free firewall". There are some freeware, open source firewalls for Windows. I've not used them.).

Ignite, I ignore how it works games in PC but try with ipconfig /all
The addresses you show are all from the router table, you have to check DNS servers
By example to me ipconfig shows

C:\WINDOWS>ipconfig /all
Windows IP Configuration
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : IPCLENOVO1
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Mixed
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
Ethernet adapter WiFi OnBoard:
Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-1B-77-05-A7-0B
Ethernet adapter LAN Ethernet OnBoard DHCP:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-16-D3-B1-F8-95
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.102
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 190.160.0.11
200.83.1.5
200.74.121.12
Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.102
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Martes, 15 de Julio de 2008 07:35:40 p.m.
Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Miércoles, 16 de Julio de 2008 07:35:40 p.m.
C:\WINDOWS>

The card to check is Ethernet adapter LAN Ethernet OnBoard DHCP:
and those addresses must be valid (not 192.168.x.x)
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 190.160.0.11

Much better than the SBG900 modem/router/wifi who's firmware (for all components) is controlled by VTR.

I also called VTR and managed to have a technician phone me back who spoke English. In the end he was adamant that VTR don't supply equipment for creating home networks and the SBG900 is setup as nothing but an access point. He quite rightly pointed out that I only need to buy a router to achieve a home network. sigh...at that point I gave up.

I've now bought a WRT54G2 router and it was very easy to set up and works seamlessly.

As an aside, As suggested in the internet wiki, I've set my dns server settings to use OpenDNS and have a significant improvement in the time it takes to resolve and load web pages. Nice suggestion.

I use OpenDNS in my computers, but sometimes it has trouble resolving some domains. Most of the time it works pretty well, and somewhat faster than most ISPs' DNS servers. I will give the other listed tweaks a try.
Testing... testing...
