Your new Mac laptop, no problem as they are definitely auto dual voltage.

The power adapter of the router, if it doesn't say up to 220 VAC, you either buy a replacement adapter at Casa Royal or you use a heavy duty transformer for constant use. I recommend Franzus transformers available at a good price at J&R.

I located a transformer at J&R, it says " Franzus 85 watt step down transformer" $19.99 is 85 watt enough? or I have to get a higher wattage? also, do I need this transformer for each of the laptop and pc we have? I'm a ding dong with regard to technology... And lastly, where's Casa Royal located?

No, no, no slow down. Follow what admin says. No transformer needed for the laptop. For the desktop, check the power supply and if it says up to 220 V, no transformer needed though there might actually be a switch that you have to flip to make it so.

The last item is the router. Check the power brick specs to see if it says 220V. If so, no transformer needed. As with the above, just a plug adapter will be needed which you can buy cheap here.

Casa Royal is the famous electronics outlet on Alameda to the East of Estado. Plug adapters you can pick up at any hypermarket.

Ok, I wasn't kidding about the "ding dong" part :D I understand now.
With regard to the router, it doesn't say nowhere 220v so I'm going to need a transformer (yes?) and here it's where my prior question was...85 watts or higher?

Yes that will do the job.

Maybe type here exactly what the specs on the power brick says to confirm that a replacement or a transformer is needed.

It says "54 Mbps Wireless Router WGR614 v5" then it has a diagram of the router Lan 4 Lan3 etc. on one side has the serial #, on the opposite side has the FCC ID Canada ID, complies with Canada rss-210. I don't see the volts nowhere!

The 85 W STEP DOWN TRANSFORMER from Franzus will require a SCHUCKO plug adapter which you can get at Casa Royal or any electronics hardware store.

You can probably get by with the 50 W travel adapter (link below) as even that one is rated for continuous use for 30 watts or less devices and it comes ready with the two prong Chile outlet. Look at the specs on the router's power brick OR the spec plate on the router to see if it is 30 watts or under.

yea, checked the specs on your router and it says:

Power Adapter:

* 12.0 VDC, 1.0 A; plug is localized to country of sale

You should be able to buy an adapter that meets Chile's requirements, and skip the transformer. One of those universal things you can set the exact specs to with a switch on it. I think.

If not, it might be cheaper to pick up another router that does.

honestly, I have never seen a computer component that did not have a built in 220 switch because they sell the same box all over the world. the companies can just switch plugs to sell in a different country. Most of the time I don't even give it any thought when buying in the states.

It's the router that we are concerned about. My thanks for the answers and your patience.

Just buy the 50 w transformer. Believe me, if you don't need it for the router you will find good use for it for something else.
