Hello, I'm from the UK. I live in Temuco with my Chilean wife. I teach English and American Literature for a living. Been here around 4 years and I have to say i really like Chile.
A couple of years ago I built a 12 foot boat and although hoisting it onto a camioneta is semi-practical, i would seize the opportunity to get a trailer for it .
Love your forum - impression : great people and information. Acknowledge over.

Thanks. Building it was quite a cool experience and it rows well on the lake at Coñaripe in Summer. I might put a sail on it.

That's a nice boat. Yeah I've also worked on car engines and bodywork. Done house renovations - once installed a platform above the stairwell. Hammered the joist supports into the side wall, then went into the bathroom to find they'd penetrated the inner wall - what a mess. Had to redo the whole bathroom wall.
I had built a house in Chile -took 2 years to finish. I paid two guys to erect the outer frame and plank it and them we finished it from inside. A lot of time was taken trying to compensate for the builder's "inconsistencies" mostly being out of square.

My boat is quite a rustic homemade item. I didn't have plans. Welded up two steel frames and bent the wood around them. The lumberyard recommended cypress but my next one will probably be in plywood. Solid timber makes for a heavy boat, which is why I'm looking for trailer. It's held together with a mix of stainless steel screws, copper and galvanized steel nails.
Hardest part was getting the bows true and getting the join between the sides and the bottom watertight. It goes great across the lake with my home-made 8 foot oars. Thought about a motor but they seem too expensive in Chile.

Thanks Admin - build that canoe!

a sail would be cool! But then you wouldn't have as much use for your oars... :) It's not often you hear a story of a hand made boat. thanks for sharing.

Making it into a sailing boat would involve a few modifications, but i'd still need the oars for when the wind dies. Also as it is, it's a passenger friendly boat but with wind power i'd have to move around to counterbalance the heeling. A capsize might unsettle the passengers. Anyway if any members are around Coñaripe this Summer they are welcome to try the boat. First time I took it out, I came back to a large group of Chileans waiting at the landing stage to hire my boat! Back in England we used to have raft parties where all the club members tie their boats together to form a sort of raft, floating way out in the lake or marina. Then we would wander across the decks with bottles of wine, food, guitars, silly comments - and have a party.
