Activities near Concepcion

Postby PotroBlanco » Thu Jul 19, 2012 2:54 pm

Hello Gringos,
I am headed back to Conce after some time away. We will be spending a lot of time with the wife's family, so I am wondering if there are any penquistas on the forum that have any advice about fun outdoors activities in the area. I am interested in Biking, Hiking, Surfing and Tennis. So any advice about that kind of stuff, or anything else fun, within a 2 hour drive would be much appreciated.

Good surf north across the river around Cobquecura.
Breaks don't handle crowds well.
Google it

You can hike south of Concepcion on either side of the Bio Bio. Tennis is available at Llakolyn (spelling correction, please) but you may need to go with a member.
In Lota there is the Cousino home which is now a park. Overlooks the mine and the ocean. The mine tour is pretty basic but fun if you''ve never been in coal mine. A miniature version of the Copper Queen mine (not coal obviously), in Arizona.
On the drive to Lota, notice where the hillside gave way a few years ago and the road collapsed.
Take the road south of Lota towards Canete. At the 110 degree bend in the road is a park. That was a power station. You can still see the old German equipment there. You can hike up the mountain to the reservoir. There are places to picnic as well. This is at the limit of the two hour each way.
