Hello All

I have been living in Santiago for 2 months now, been teaching English but not really my cup of tea. My Spanish is still fairly basic, any suggestions or ideas for alternative careers here in Chile?

Been there, hated that.
Best advise is to make A PLAN...for ex. Plan A= If I'm not employed in "x" months, go to plan B or C.
Plan B, start my own business
Plan C, bail out'a here!

basic spanish, and dont want to teach, your best bet is bar work... try anywhere that gringos go often!

Suggest you start looking at doing a few courses. Get some bar or restaurante work while you do the course. I recommend looking at going to sea, i.e. Cruise ships, or Merchant navy (thats if you have your citizenship). For jobs at sea, you need to do a course called STCW95, which covers all your basic safety requirements. Then, if you go merchant navy, you will need Tripulante general de Cubierta. Your Castellano needs to be quite good to do this course as it covers alot of technical vocabularly.

Also look at starting up business here aswell, maybe you could get a loan from the bank or something.
