I am sitting at my desk right now.
I have had some calls from family in Chile encouraging me to leave, and go have dinner to celebrate. Which I might at some point. But as of 7:30 pm, I am still in the office.
Really we normally work most holidays excluding the big ones that are shared (Christmas for instance), for one simple reason: only half of the World tends to bother us on those days, and so we can get a lot done in the other half. If it is a Chilean holiday, then we get caught up easily on all of our buisness outside of the country because the Chilean phone lines are dead. If it is a Gringo holiday like today, we get a lot done inside Chile because the gringo lines are dead. It is not a hard and fast rule, and often does not really work out that way, but generally we tend to work most holidays. Sometimes we just decide to invoke a holiday, that we might have worked in previous years.
Strangely, some holidays we get a lot of calls from gringos that have a moment to think about moving to Chile. Day after Christmas is often a pretty active one. I have had two or three calls today from people that had a day off, and decided to give Chile some more thought. Again, no real rule to any of it.
