Call me a stupider gringa for asking even after a picture is shown, but would that be what I would call a bolt cutter? Or is it bigger/stronger?

yes :), they come in sizes from about 5" in size to about 5 feet in size, the longer the handles the more force can be applied, the bigger the bolt can be cut...

but as chileans are cheap and buy cheap steel, a small 1ft one would do the job!

Fences, chains, and locks are meant to keep honest people honest.

I have the largest, ahem, Napoleón that I could buy in Natales, about 700 cm long, and it was still not enough to cut the hardened 6mm diametre steel on a padlock I encountered not long ago. Soft steel as you might find in chains, no problem, but not the hardened steel of even moderate sized padlocks.

I am sure you meant 700 mm long. 700 cm is 7 meters!

You are sure and you are right: should be 70 cm

On the other hand, if Claudio had had a 7 meter one he would not have had to leave home to burgle his neighbour.

Go to the big stores like sodimac or easy, where they are commonly sold in many sizes. You will notice the smaller, cheaper, and easily concealed ones, are generally out of stock. Now go over to the chain and locks section, they typically have a similar sized one for cutting small cables and chains to length (the cheap stuff everyone buys), and a power cutter for the stuff the smaller bolt cutter will not go through. Buy the chain, locks, and cables, that bolt cutter will not go through or will not fit in the jaws (the one they need to use the power cutter for ).

The thieves that get their hands on real equipment, go in to the ATM biz (both stealing them and owning them).
