For anybody stateside - just did a search on Kayak for RT from JFK to SCL November 10-30 and they have nonstop flights for $899. Looks like those fares would be valid for a fairly large window of dates around that time as well.

$160 USD for newcomers may not be a great incentive...and as I recall, giant economic crisis occurring or something like that...only the scum who make their living from the military-industrial-security-other parasitic activity state or were fortunate to retire before the crisis can afford to come to "expensive" Chile.
