Desperately need help! Is there anyone out there?

Postby macca666 » Mon Jun 18, 2012 2:38 pm

I have been living in Santiago, Chile for the last 18 months
My temporal residential visa ran out in March and I was planning to drive from Chile to New York in my Jeep Cherokee with my family
Anyway, to cut a long story short, mechanics in Argentina destroyed my car as they did not understand the Jeep's computer system
The car has been written off
Fortunately, the insurance company in England have paid out and after realising how expensive cars in Argentina are, we have head back to Iquique in Northern Chile
We have found a car we want to buy but when I visited the notario with the owner we were turned away because I do not have a RUT card now, only a 90 day toursit visa
A few questions

1.) I believe I have to go to the Governacion instead of the SII for a new RUT
Does anyone know how long this takes

2.) If I can require the temporary RUT, can a transferece take place

3.) After acquiring a pasavante (as all the paperwork is up-todate in the respect of technical revision, circule de permission, insurance etc)

Will I have problems because the car was bought in Iquique?

4.) Upon arriving in US, can i keep the car

Any help with this would be much appreicated as we have had 3 weeks of Hell!!!

Many thanks
Paul

I will just add a few points.

- there is a reason cars in IQQ cost less. You skip the taxation. But many of them are non - liberado. They can only be used within zona franca (Arica- IQQ ) and be away no longer than 90 days. You should investigate repercussions of taking non liberado vehicle away from Chile. There may be severe tax implications.

- If you buy US made vehicle yuo should be fine back in US. If not most likely it will be a scrap job on arrival.

Search is your friend.
This has been discussed in minuet detail and the pluses and minuses are all there. Long and short, you must have the vehicle in your name and you must have all the original documents with your name on them. You will be crossing 8-10 borders going north if you have a dodging looking photocopy (even notarized, what does Costa Rican border guards know of Chilean notaries?) in hand you may be sitting in a small border town spinning for a time and taking the bus onward.
Use your old RUT number or get a new, I don’t know, when you apply they may say you already have one. Sorry about what the Argies did to your Jeep, someone over there friendly with the mechs that screwed it up is driving it around now smiling.
It's all about the wine.
