Postby admin on Sat Jun 16, 2007 10:53 pm

We now have a photo Gallery. This is still very much in the testing phase to make sure it does not cause any problems.

Please resize your photos before posting. It will keep our bandwidth bill under control.

Also please let me know if any spammers should sneak in.

ONLY PHOTOS RELATED TO CHILE.

ONLY PHOTOS FOR A GENERAL AUDIENCE

Charles,
Seems some of the pics have dissapeared.
Any thoughts as to why?

Wouldn't it be a good idea to create a flickr allchile group? It'd also increase the awareness of the forum, and you'll also save resources.

That is exactly why this forum is here, so that Chile related topic stuff does not get swallowed up by some massive MSN/YAHOO/Google social networking monster that covers millions of different topics with billions of pages that have nothing to do with Chile. It turns Chile topics in to the needles in the haystack of the internet.

sorry, somehow missed this posting. The photo gallery will transform them on the fly. However if you try to upload say a photo that is 20 mb, you are going to have trouble. There are caps to control spammers and denial of service attacks. I think I set the upload size at 1 mb, but can not remember at the moment.

The gallery will automatically resize the photos to 600 wide by a variable height to keep proportions, and should come in at under about 200 kb per photo allowing for a lot more photos and faster load times. Quality is set at 80 compression for JPG

There is really not that many good reason I can think of for posting a photo on the internet over that size (at least that anyone will stick around and wait for it to download). It is completely possible to have 600 x 800 photo, that is around 200 kbs, and very little quality loss. Most data above that is just waisted data space, unless you are intending to print. In that case, the internet is the wrong place to go looking for high res photos for printing.

Charles,

I don't know how to resize a photo to include in a post that might be relevant, like other posters do. Is it simple? I'd like to have an avatar but don't know how to resize for that either.

There are free tools to do this. You can google for "freeware photo resize." I found this online service: http://www.picresize.com/

If you're fastidious about the quality, resizing can be a bit complicated. Usually reducing a photo causes it to become "soft" (requiring an "unsharp" filter to sharpen it up). Saving a JPEG multiple times causes things to go from bad to worse because JPEG is lossy. Each save loses a little more. To have complete control, it's better to work with TIF and use something like Photoshop (expensive). Using Photoshop you can do things like increase the DPI to 300 (to have more information), reduce the size, and "unsharp" it. Then set it back to 72 DPI. (This is what the fastidious people do.).

If it's a one-time thing, you can PM me and I'll give you my email address. You can email the photo and I'll do it for you. Or, you can try that free online service.
