Horses

Postby Weltlich on Wed Jun 06, 2007 8:28 am

I'm looking to visit regions IX and X next year with a few friends to scout around for property, and was curious if there were any places that "rent" horses for a month or two. Basically, we'd prefer horseback for moving around checking GPS and land markers rather than 4x4'ing in somewhere and then trying to figure out how to hike back to wherever. Plus, hey, who wouldn't like to ride around in nature on a horse?

We're looking at a one and a half to three month visit, so would we be better served to outright buy horses, then sell them back once we're ready to head home? What's the going rate on a trail horse?

Also: Is the phenomenon of the "Riding Mule" something that occurs in Chilean Patagonia? I grew up in the Appalachians, and was spoiled with how sure footed they were. If we could find some there, that'd be awsome.

Horse will run you between about $100-600 US depending on what you want for riding. It would likely cost you as much for the saddles and such.

Horses are great, but remember you will be locked in to a very limited range with a horse (say 100 km), and Chile is very big. There are no horse trailers in Chile. In fact I have never ever seen one. They move horses in the back of cargo type trucks the way they move cows. I am sure the race horses have trailers, but in rural areas no way.

Unless you have a very specific location, then it is better to arrange for horses for each outing to look at property.

If you need horses for say several weeks in an area, you can typically cut a deal with the guys who rent by the day for that.

A lot of times when we go out to look at large ranches in remote locations, the seller provides us horses.

You are correct, there are many places especially in the Patagonia that no motor vehicles (including dirt bike), will get you there. Dirt bikes don't cross raging rivers very well, and they don't jump trees very well. More importantly they run out of gas.

I have never seen a mule in Chile.
