Valbier gets my vote for the best in Chile. Kuntsman I find to be too watered down, and they are cheap on the hops.

As for brew your own kits, you might be able to mail order it from the States or Europe. The brewmaster at valbier told us that all their stuff was shipped in from out of country. I plan to start brewing my own also as soon as I have time.

For imports, Jumbo supermarket has the best selection of German and other European beers.

I have been a homebrewer since 1984, just wondering if you can get supplies or if they are shipped in from elsewhere. Sounds like it would be shipped in.

My dream is to someday have the time and space to grow all the ingredients myself. I might even take a crack at testing some of the wild yeast in diffrent locations in southern chile. Works in Belgium, but I would not expect anything too tasty. It would just be more for the fun of trying it. Finding a good water sources might also be an intresting challenge in southern Chile.

At the Kuntsman brewery in Valivia, they have an intresting note in their history about how the tidal wave killed their water source. I suspect it also killed the orginal brew that Kuntsman family started. The current Kuntsman was restarted by some cousins, and is only about 20 years old as I understand it. They try real hard though at every turn to link themselves to German beer laws and how old they are.

speaking of brewing your own beer, i've done it a couple times and have all the equipment, however i buy the ingredients from a supply place here in the states. It's a blast, and even if it doesn't turn out as good as store-bought, in your own mind it's way better cuz you made it yourself. for you beer lovers, i highly recommend it...it's just kinda tedious with all the sterilization and steps and whatnot. This last batch of mine turned out better and i'm sure all subsequent batches will keep improving.

I've been anxiously reading the ongoing saga of Chuckj - collecting tidbits of info on BEER as I read. Hope Chuckj is fine. Don't think I'll do Chica, but I think I will definately beer-sample my way around. Question: Can I buy and carry a few bottles with me for the long bus rides (is that frowned upon), and do they have toilets on the buses?

I see you found our forum. Beer is fine on the bus, but you can't drink it on the bus. We have seen some drunks pulled off the bus by the Police in the middle of the trip. They drivers do stop and report it to the police.

Some of the Tur buses are nicer than the airplanes. They all have bathrooms on board.

Good Grief! I guess I better be careful and not send my husband to buy Chica for me. Wouldn't be the first time we made a goof. Broke my leg in Costa Rica a couple of years ago and had to send him out grocery shopping the day after returning from the hospital. List: Pollo entero- grande, 1 kilo of atun. At the market instead he asked for a macho polo ("this big" he indicated with his hands) and a kilometer of atun. Thanks to kind shop owners (supressing laughter) he came home with the goodies and promptly informed me that I was never allowed to break a bone, or get sick again. Ever.

I came upon your forum and thought you looked friendly enough to ask for some advice

I am Chilean, and I've been searching on and off for 5 years for 2 member sof my birth family and have so far come up with no answer, and several rude people along the way.

Just wondering if any of you who are currently there could give me any advice on where to look. I have names and ages of my birthmother and birthbrother and that is all.
