chicha

Postby el puelche on Tue Oct 03, 2006 10:32 am

Ok...we've got a mission for you....this must be done in the central valley...casualy go out into the country and loose your way...don't do anything dangerous...the more grapes in the field you see the better...now find a small country store that says "hay chicha" or really anything that says chicha....now go in and ask if you can have a taste right there....the best places that have chicha also have alot of flies so don't worry. If you like it than buy a carafa but remember chicha does not travel well and should never be drunk alone. There is an advanced mission in chicha but lets see how you do with this one first...if you don't get any good stories than repeat mission until you do.

ciao, el puelche

SP:
Remember that it is un-wise to climb to deep into la quica and try to climb out and drive a car....la chicha sneaks up on you ...so maybe look for a store with a hotel on top although don't be surprised if you end up at someone's house.....and if you do all the other standard rules apply...

Be careful if mixing your pisco drinks with other alcoholic drinks (especially Chilean wine) throughout the night, that seems to exacerbate the pisco stupefying effects even more. Don't ask me how I know this.

mission error

Postby admin on Tue Oct 03, 2006 6:33 pm

el puelche I have one problem with the logic of your mission. How is Chuckj going to be able to report back to us, after drinking by himself? We need organize an escort for him. Otherwise he will likly not rember anything the next day anyway. Then also, I guess that will be evidence by itself that all went well. :P

pisco death mix

Postby el puelche on Wed Oct 04, 2006 1:11 pm

Yes the mixing of the pisco is deadly and extremely good advice.

I think the fact that chuckj is mia now a couple of days could mean that he is mid-mission and we shouldn't from him for a little bit. I personaly will not begin to worry for at least 5 more days. I say 5 days because he could very well walk back to santiago from where ever the bus left him.

wine

Postby admin on Thu Oct 05, 2006 1:01 am

After he recovers, we will have to come up with a list of good wine for chuckj. Otherwise he might get the wrong idea about the quality of drink in Chile.

I would like to start off by making a a first nomination:

Porta Syrah 2001 Grand Reserva Should run you between about $5,000-12,000 pesos. Try the wine store "Mundo de vinos". You can find them in most major cities in Chile.

For discount safe drinking Leon de Tarapaca is a safe bet, and sold at just about every Esso gas station. Any bottle should run you between $1,500 (basic)to $3,000 pesos (Grand reserva). Good for a gift to your host at a friendly party. They will not call you a wine guru, but they also will most likly not be insulted and kick you out.

When in doubt about what to buy, try them all. 8)

p.s. I will get us some new emotions for the forum A.S.A.P.

vinito

Postby el puelche on Thu Oct 05, 2006 2:18 am

well I'm sure I'm to hear it but I like the bodega uno in red or white, and yes I now it comes in a box!!!!

I like anything from Montes and especialy the carmenere/cabernet mix.

I also like anything from Santa Emiliana.

Cousino Macul I had liked a few years back but everything they made imho got an old dusty taste and so I stopped buying it. I think they got lazy and didn't change thier barrels or bought cheap ones.

gris from Cousino Macul

Postby admin on Thu Oct 05, 2006 3:46 am

For something really strange in wine try Gris and we believe it is from Cousino Macul also. It is a Cabernet Sauvinon but it is is a white Cabernet.

Myself I am a Belgium beer freek. My wife is more the wine expert.

beer

Postby el puelche on Thu Oct 05, 2006 11:30 am

I like kuntsman from valdivia for beer.

We make our own chicha(apple) and I am considering making my own beer.

Does anyone know of any home brew supply places in Chile?

There is most likely some kind of club or olde german group of friends that have the yeast and the rest could be used to make do I think.

val bier

Postby admin on Thu Oct 05, 2006 2:29 pm

Valbier gets my vote for the best in Chile. Kuntsman I find to be too watered down, and they are cheap on the hops.

As for brew your own kits, you might be able to mail order it from the States or Europe. The brewmaster at valbier told us that all their stuff was shipped in from out of country. I plan to start brewing my own also as soon as I have time.

For imports, Jumbo supermarket has the best selection of German and other European beers.

I have been a homebrewer since 1984, just wondering if you can get supplies or if they are shipped in from elsewhere. Sounds like it would be shipped in.

natural brew

Postby admin on Thu Oct 05, 2006 8:31 pm

My dream is to someday have the time and space to grow all the ingredients myself. I might even take a crack at testing some of the wild yeast in diffrent locations in southern chile. Works in Belgium, but I would not expect anything too tasty. It would just be more for the fun of trying it. Finding a good water sources might also be an intresting challenge in southern Chile.

At the Kuntsman brewery in Valivia, they have an intresting note in their history about how the tidal wave killed their water source. I suspect it also killed the orginal brew that Kuntsman family started. The current Kuntsman was restarted by some cousins, and is only about 20 years old as I understand it. They try real hard though at every turn to link themselves to German beer laws and how old they are.
