Bringing a cat to Chile?

Postby Alizabel » Tue Apr 03, 2012 3:51 pm

I am planning to move to Chile in June for at least a year and would really like to bring my cat with me. Does anyone know how possible this is? He is an indoor cat and has had his shots and been neutered. I'm wondering what the process is for bringing an animal to Chile and also if there is any chance that I will have trouble bringing him back into the US in a year or two? (He will be a indoor cat the whole time). Can anyone help me?

Don't think that is a problem, considering I own the sites the article is published on that show up in Google.

It is covered at length on the forum with more recent information.

one thing that is new and I am not sure that is covered in any of the threads yet, is that you have to have a chip implanted in your animal now. Which is not a major issue, since most animals from the States are chipped these days.

We had some clients that travel every year with their dog from the States, just reported that they had to have the dog(s) chipped this time. The dogs have done the trip several times a year for many years without ever being required to have a implant.

Does the chip have to have the information translated or does the dog or cat carry around the legal translation in their furry little paw??? ;)

Don't think it is a problem, since no one else in the country has a chip reader.

We just moved to Santiago and brought our two cats from Las Vegas to Santiago. Yes, you need to have your pets chipped, however, the official in the Santiago airport did not even examine our cats. My wife was holding them a distance away in their carriers and the official and I were sitting at his desk. He just glanced at them and nodded. Pre requisites are that your cats MUST have current rabies shots AND the travel shots (I think the tick, flea thingy) which is administered 72 hours prior to departure. Oh, and you need to get a form filled out and signed by the USDA that verifies your US vet's credentials and their proof of rabies and other tests. Unless you live in a US city that also has a local chapter of the USDA, you need to plan for more days. Our USDA department was in Sacramento, CA and we lived in Las Vegas, NV. However, we were able to send a prepaid Fedex package to the USDA with the forms and an envelope for them to sign and return. The whole process took 2 days! They are efficient for being a government entity!
We booked our cats to travel with us in the cabin. US now has a policy against carrying your pets in the hold of the plane between the months of May and September. However, you can have them shipped separately as cargo. We had a very good experience with TSA in Las Vegas as well. We told them that we would like them to be scanned privately instead of passing them through the scanner like baggage. They took me and the two cats to a private room where I got each cat out of their container and held them while they scanned the carrier and then ran the scanner on the cats. Then they remarked on how cute the cats were and away we went! Check with the specific airline for their pets in the cabin policy. We had no problems fitting the cats under the seat and they settled right down to sleep. If they meowed during the flight we never heard it! The ambient sounds in the airplane muffled their meows. Since we had a stop over in Atlanta, we took that opportunity to feed and water the cats and check up on them. They were fine. The only down side was that the cats were the only carry on we were allowed. So our computers etc were checked in. My wife got to carry her purse and I got to carry my ipad in addition to the cats. Which was fine for us.
If you have all the paperwork in place, bringing in cats should be a breeze! It always helps to have a vet who knows these regulations. Our vets were an outfit called ALl About Cats. I can't speak highly enough about them. Their vets are professional and knowledgeable. They helped us take our cats to England a few years ago (that is a whole other story!) and now Chile.

Hi there,

Did you manage to bring your cat with you without problems? I just posted a separate thread regarding the 3 month wait after the rabies result, but I see you were 2 months away from your move when you posted this so if you managed to bring him with you without problems I assume this rule is no longer valid!

Thanks!

I am curious what airline this was. We have a small dog that goes back and forth and would like to be able to take her in the cabin next time. It would greatly free up our travel windows if she could go in cabin since there are few times of the year that it is not too hot in Chile / cold in US or vice versa to fly her in the hold.

thanks,
pl

Bringing a cat into Chile is easy... you just have to follow the guidelines set up by the Chilean immigration page. The hardest part is the timing of vaccinations AND most especially finding a USDA vet for that health certificate.

It's easy to bring cats, and dogs, to Chile. We brought quite a few with us not too long ago and none of them were/are chipped. No problem. Just make sure the required health certificates are completed properly by your vet and signed/stamped by the USDA people. We fedexed the paperwork to the USDA office with a cover letter explaining our need, and a cc number noted for them to charge the fee. We also included a return fedex envelope.
Their website has good info, but you have to dig into it a bit, depending on your state.
