Considering most computers and equipement off the shelf now can not make full use of even CAT5e, and very few would know what to do with CAT6, you would be waisting money on CAT7. Especially if by the time you get around to using it in your house (i.e. 3-5 years is an eternity in technology), it is replaced by some wireless standard or similar. Fiber, perhaps, depending on what you are doing.

For true future proofing, take the time to run conduit or create easy access panels, that will allow you to quickly and cheaply upgrade to whatever comes along.

In my own house I am not only planning for the data, but also simply being able to quickly fix a leaky pipe in the middle of the night.

El p, thanks for the response. Lots to consider I wasn't even thinking about the run to the house but that is even more to consider.

Admin, the reason I brought up cat7 is because each twisted pair is shielded then the whole bundle is shielded and it is backwards compatible to cat5 so you can run it right beside 220v electrical with out worrying about the EM interference. Ideally I want to run ~2" shielded conduit through all the walls at 18" below the ceiling then I can spur off at anytime. What I had in mind is something like this, http://www.galco.com/scripts/cgiip.exe/wa/wcat/catalog.htm?family=COND&subfamily=SHIF&. That way I can run unshielded Cat5e for Data & phone, and RG6 for TV right now then be able to upgrade to what ever comes in the future fairly easily as long as it fits in the conduit.

honestly, all things being equal, not a bad idea. I get where you are coming from, but in practice I really don't see the value gain in data. Honestly, I would never run my cat cable, no matter what they say about the shielding, up against the electric unless forced to by design. Even when I have been forced to, I can never recall an instance of a problem I could trace to the electric cable being too close to the cat. Bad cables, bad connections, bad computers, and so on, but EM interference in a standard shielded cable never had a problem in a house.

Bigger issue I have encountered was in regards to phone lines having EM interference, or wireless routers crossing wireless phones. In cable transfers over house type distances, never seen it.

The twisted pairs and diferential line drivers used in ethernet 100base-t provide adequate noise immunity in most situations up to the max segment length, its a very robust technology. The main reason I could see for using shielded cable is to reduce rfi radiation from the cable itself....can't hurt though.
PS only ground the screens at one end of the cable run, ie at the switch.

Fine North American quality construction you could do well over time, “contracting” you don’t know the meaning of the word in Chile, it’s not the same as NA or Europe.
